The title of this book may suggest that it is designed as a latter-day Gradus ad Parnassum to teach aspiring writers to produce passable verses. It is not. It is intended to help aspiring readers deepen their sensitivity to the rhythmical and formal properties of poetry and thus heighten their pleasure and illumination as an appropriately skilled audience of an exacting art.

About the Author
Paul Fussell, critic, essayist, and cultural commentator, has recently won the H. L. Mencken Award of the Free Press Association. Among his books are "The Great War and Modem Memory, " which in 1976 won both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award; "Abroad: British Literary Traveling Between the Wars; Wartime: Understanding and Behavior in the Second World War;" and, most recently, "BAD or, The Dumbing of America." His essays have been collected in "The Boy Scout Handbook and Other Observations" and "Thank God for the Atom Bomb and Other Essays." He lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches English at the University of Pennsylvania.

And for the poet!

Fussell's foreword says that his book is for aspiring readers, not aspiring writers. But if you are an aspiring poet, I think Fussell has something to offer that is absent in most "handbooks".

One of the most important things Fussell addresses is how the form of a poem affects the meaning and impression of the total poem. For example, he notes how many poetic forms are inevitably coloured by their initial or most famous use. He says regarding Tennyson's In Memoriam stanza-form, that it "is now so closely associated with the sturdy, serviceable elegaic atmosphere of In Memoriam itself that...its uses now seem limited to occasions which either resemble or mock the original" (Ch 8 The English Stanzas).

Another chapter that poets will find helpful is Metrical Variations, in which Fussell examines how poets substitute variant feet to create particular effects. Or if your interest is in free verse, he devotes a chapter to examining the characteristics of successful free verse, including how line breaks create effects.

This is not a substitute for a general handbook of poetry, and assumes a minimal knowledge of poetic technique, meter, &c. But if you are serious about reading or writing poetry, I don't think you can afford to miss this book.

Not for the neophyte, but a tremendous study

When I was 21 and in my first year of graduate school, Paul Fussell's "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form" was one of the first text books assigned to me. When I bought the book and saw how slim it was, I snickered, "Grad school's gonna be a walk in the park!"

Yeah, RIGHT!

This densely packed tome is not for the uninitiated and definitely not absorbed in just one reading. On and off, over the last 20 years, I have come back to this book to refresh my memory and, usually, to astonish myself. The book's real strength, besides Professor Fussell's obvious command of his subject, and his ability to convey that command, is in the sprinkling of dozens of anecdotes by and about poets about other poets and poetry. Even at this late date in my life, I can't pretend to understand the entire book but what I do understand I admire and respect. "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form" is not recommended to anyone studying poetry; it is urgently required.

This book is a classic of prosodic exposition. (And understand, when I call a book a classic, I am not just lapsing into a cliche; it really IS a classic.) Fussell shows us the relations between form and content, between rhyme and rhythm on the one hand and the function of these formal devices to illuminate meaning on the other. The book also devotes a chapter to empirical observations on the properties of free verse, and it includes a concise bibliography of other works on prosody. Highly recommended.

About the Author
An acclaimed art critic, columnist, and editor, KAY LARSON began her career in journalism in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at The Real Paper, then served as an associate editor at ARTnews and an art critic for the Village Voice. She was the art critic for New York magazine for fourteen years, and has been a frequent contributor to the New York Times. In 1994, she entered Zen practice at a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York. Though Larson has written for many types of publications, Where the Heart Beats is her first book.

A Unifying Perspective of the Influence of Zen and the Emergence of the Contemporary Art Scene in America

If you ever wondered why the three items in the subtitle relate, wonder no more. Rather be curious enough to delve into it more deeply. Clearly written with just a bit of extraneous rmeandering this book had me "So maybe that's why I favor this direction rather than that in the art world..I never connected the two before or thought about connecting them." Of course I am a Californian and was familiar with the names, art, music, dance and Zen Center of San Fransico all of which I referred to and put into context for me. A definite buy whether you like John Cage's stuph or not, have an interest in the influence of Buddhism in the 20th century on American creativity.

Finally someone took the time and research to write about the full life JOhn Cage had. Not just to focus on one thing about him. The problem with writing about just one piece of who John was means you leave out all the reasons he created his art. Everything about him from his upbringing, personal life, spiritual journey to mental health was part of the musical pieces we all enjoy to this day. You cannot truly write about him without writing about everything.

By the end of this book you discover John Cage and end with a much better understanding of each piece of music he created. You will feel like you actually know him. It is an amazing book, very well written and laid out.Very insightful.

Richard Alan Miller did his undergraduate work in theoretical physics at Washington State Universiy, with graduate work in solid-state physics at the University of Delaware. Then he spent over a decade in biomedical research and development. He has been published in several international journals for his work in both physics and philosophy. He has also taught courses in small farm agriculture, and is the author of Native Plants of Commercial Importance, Forest Farming, Computers on the Farm, and Successful Farm Ventrues. This book is akin to buying a hard-bound expanded copy of Ultima V's "Book of Lore" on PC (right down the the B&W ink line drawings in the Bestiary section). As a kid, this is the book you would read from back of the car on the trip home from the computer store. If you are a collector of PC RPGs and want extra materials to go on the shelf with your physical copy of the game, go right on ahead.

It would be helpful if this listing put it's line: "Please note, this is not a strategy guide." in BOLD and at the top of the description INSTEAD of at the bottom.

Some of the best fluff around, no crunch!

If you loved poring over D&D Campaign Setting Books like Forgotten Realms from 3rd Edition, then this book should be in your collection. If not, then you need to either be obsessed with Pillars of Eternity or a fan of world building. This book covers details of Eora, Pillars of Eternity's world, and it gets really in depth. You'll get a chapter on the pantheon of gods which has a nice asymmetry to it (there are 3 gods involved with death). There is also a chapter on souls and animancy, something unique to Eora, where they describe the reincarnation of all kith and the different viewpoints on it. The chapter detailing the various regions and their populations and other statistics looks good but I only skimmed it. There is a chapter on races which details sub-races and their locations as well as going into their migration patterns. Then there are two chapters on history, one older history, one more recent. Finally there is a bestiary which has some nice illustrations (though there are excellent pieces of art throughout).

Overall I have not yet read the entire thing but I am enthralled and pleased with this piece of the puzzle. It could definitely be used as an inspiration for a pen-and-paper campaign in Eora, though you would need an existing system since there are no statistics listed (just fluff, no crunch). I'm very excited to play the game tomorrow and this has been a nice resource to thumb through in anticipation of the game's release!

Not Enough

Disappointed with the purchase since I am loving every minute of the game. The book feels hastily put together for such a rich world Obsidian created.

Very very light on visuals. I was expecting to see concept art of locations, characters etc and instead for the most part they have used portraits or shots from the game itself (except for the bestiary section).

The book although does a good job of describing the different races, religions, conflicts, historic events etc, they all seem very very brief and at times repetitive. And they did not spend any time on the different character classes (to be fair they are in the manual), but I wanted to learn more about some of the more interesting classes the game has such as the Ciphers, Chanters etc.

It seems like a missed opportunity to showcase the world Obsidian has created. Compare this to the Dragon Age: World of Thedas volumes (also published by Dark Horse) and the 3 stars feel a little too generous. Not trying to compare the resources used to build both games but the book doesnt do justice to the richness and depth of Pillars of Eternity

Proof You Shouldn't Judge a Book by its Cover

What sets Thomas Sowell apart from many economists and intellectuals is his ability to present complex ideas with both clarity and simplicity. As he himself once noted, "If academic writings were difficult because of the deep thoughts involved, that might be understandable, even if frustrating. Seldom is that the case, however. Jaw-breaking words often cover up very sloppy thinking." For Sowell, economics is no exception.

In Basic Economics, he reminds you that economics is the study of the use of scarce resources which have alternative uses. And with this fundamental truth in mind we see a master expositor at work. He derives many economic principles from this easily forgotten fact, offering you real-life examples along the way. This book was, of course, written for the layman. In fact, no prior knowledge of economics is needed before you read it. Yet the book is of such breadth and depth that economist Dr. Walter Williams says "it provides an understanding of some economic phenomena that might prove elusive to a Ph.D. economist."

As you read and become familiar with how Sowell thinks, you will yourself begin to think like an economist. You will learn to judge policies not by their proposed goals, but by the incentives they are likely to create, which may have the opposite effect of their intended goals. You will learn to think about not only a policy's immediate effects, but also its effects in the long run, and not only its effects to a specific group of people, but to everyone. In the process, many of your long-held cherished beliefs may be challenged.

Consider, for instance, minimum wage laws. Sowell explains why increasing the price an employer must pay his employees--though put into law for benevolent reasons--can have unintended bad effects, like an increase in unemployment. He also explains why, for similar reasons, rent control decreases the quality of apartment buildings, or why lowering the price of gas can cause a shortage.

This 5th edition of Basic Economics includes a new chapter on international disparities in wealth. An insightful chapter, Sowell explains why some countries enjoy luxury while others suffer poverty, pointing to such commonly overlooked factors as geography and culture. Another addition is that this book ends with a section of questions covering important economic issues. If you don't know the answer to a question, it tells you where in the book you could find it. This is especially helpful for someone forgetful like me, who must regularly return to refresh on economics. It's also helpful for quizzing yourself to see how well you understood the information.

To say that Sowell's books have boring covers and titles is an understatement. But they provide strong evidence for the claim that "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover." I recommend this book as a must-read to everyone, not just to aspiring economists. (I also highly recommend Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson.) However, I would be remiss if I did not include in this review any drawbacks, and there's a big one. Basic Economics will leave you more pessimistic for your country than before you opened it.

This is an absolutely excellent book. For those who gave this book less than a five star rating I think you missed the point.

The truth of the matter is the vast majority of the American population does not have a clue about economic principles and their impact on their daily lives. I strongly recommend it....that includes the uneducated as well as the educated.... and I strongly believe it should be a requirement for anyone who would lead our nation either in politics or in business. (No one should run for President without a solid grasp of its contents). As country we would be in much better shape if it was read and understood by all.

It is very helpful for even those who consider themselves as "knowledgeable" in the field...it will cause you think and probably consider certain aspects of how economics work in the every day world. Yes, it is sometimes "simple" to set a base but it is from this base that leads one into deeper thought about the underlying principles that control the world we live in. As one who has had graduate level economics and finance work I found it quite refreshing. Most of those courses were highly quantitative...and, reading this did make think again It is good to see Dr. Sowell put economics in a format that can be grasped by most lay individuals yet do an outstanding job of giving good concrete examples....without filing a blackboard with equations. For those of you who want more....buy a used graduate level text book or two....but first brush up on your calculus and statistics.

The narrative builds too slowly, and some of the passages seem out of character or overblown (e.g., a few times Jess's parents mention that they feel they're neglecting her; Jess tells the river boy, "Stay a mystery a little longer. I can't take any more truth right now"). However, Bowler's (The Midget) 1998 Carnegie Medal winner succeeds in conveying the strong bond between Jess and her grandfather; as the novel unfolds, she realizes they have more in common than she'd ever imagined. Grade 5-8-Emilia Fox's splendid reading of British author Tim Bowler's beautifully written book makes this a highly worthwhile addition to library collections. Part naturalistic meditation on death and loss, part mystical Twilight Zone-style adventure, River Boy tells of 15-year-old Jess who loves two things: swimming and her ornery yet compassionate artist grandfather. The story begins with the family preparing a visit to grandpa's boyhood home in the British countryside. Grandfather suffers from poor health and a bad heart, and most of the text deals with Jess preparing herself for his death. He works on a melancholy painting called "River Boy," but no matter how long Jess studies it she can't see the boy. The plot takes a strange turn when Jess encounters the actual River Boy, a wise being who may or may not be real. River Boy is a poetic, tender story that packs a tremendous punch at the end as the title character helps Jess achieve a deeper spiritual understanding. The grandfather is an unforgettable character, cranky yet lovable, tough yet vulnerable, and Fox's interpretation of his crackly voice is right on target. Although the narrative drags a bit in the middle when grandfather's talkative old childhood friend slows things down, patient listeners will be rewarded in the end. The production is crystal clear. Agood addition to units on death and loss.

Grandfather Granddaugter Relationship

Jess' grandfather is acting very strangely. He has always been grumpy and irritable--that's no different from usual. He has always been a painter, too, obsessed with finishing a painting he's started and especially nasty to those around him until he does manage to find the inspiration to finish it. But the painting he's working on now is not in his usual style, and this one has a name: "River Boy." He's never named one of his paintings before. To make matters even stranger, he has insisted his son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter Jess go on a vacation to the place he lived growing up. The family drives for hours and moves into a small cottage by a river that starts up beyond them and eventually flows down into the ocean. Jess, an excellent swimmer who craves time in the water, loves the location and the river.

Jess' parents are worried, though. Before they left, Jess' grandfather had a heart attack. He insisted on being let out of the hospital in order to go on vacation, but their vacaton spot is so secluded, they worry he will have another heart attack and won't be able to get to a hospital again in time. Her grandfather is fixated on one thing--finishing the painting he's started. It seems to be the only goal he has left in life, but it becomes more and more difficult as he gets weaker and weaker. Jess is torn. She doesn't know how to help him or what he needs. Furthermore, there seems to be a mystery surrounding this place. She keeps seeing a boy out in the river at the strangest hours, a boy she suspects is watching her. Who is he? Is he really as mysterious as Jess thinks, or is her imagination simply running away with her?

I really liked the relationship between Jess and her grandfather. They were very close despite his crabbiness. It was nice that Jess was able to look beyond that. I thought the ending of this book was really good. Things really came together and made sense. However, I didn't like the way Jess' grandfather treated her father; that made me dislike the character of the grandfather a little bit.

The book I chose to read and review was River Boy by Tim Bowler. It is a very interesting book to read which is very surprising to me because the cover made it seem like a boring book (never judge a book by it's cover. The story had a mystery to it that you couldn't figure out until the very end of the book. I like how the author used the river flowing like humans' life and death. Our birth is where the river forms and our struggles are like the rivers fast times and slow times and the river finally flows into the ocean, and that is our death. I enjoyed this book a lot and is now one of my favorite books. It must be good because it won the 1998 Carnegie medal (which is a medal for the best childrens book). It was a good book to me so I think reader age13-17 would enjoy it also.
