About the Author
Dan Harrington began playing poker professionally in 1982. On the circuit he is known as Action Dan, an ironic reference to his solid but effective style. He has won several major no-limit hold em tournaments including the European Poker Championships (1995), the $2,500 No-Limit Hold em event at the 1995 World Series of Poker, and the Four Queens No-Limit Hold em Championship (1996).

Dan began his serious games-playing with chess, where he quickly became a master and one of the strongest players in the New England area. In 1972 he won the Massachusetts Chess Championship, ahead of most of the top players in the area. In 1976 he started playing backgammon, a game which he also quickly mastered. He was soon one of the top money players in the Boston area, and in 1981 he won the World Cup of backgammon in Washington D.C., ahead of a field that included most of the world s top players.

He first played in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold em Championship Event of the World Series of Poker in 1987. He has played in the championship a total of 15 times and has reached the final table in four of those tournaments, an amazing record. Besides winning the World Championship in 1995, he finished sixth in 1987, third in 2003, and fourth in 2004. In 2006 he finished second at the Doyle Brunson North American Championships at the Bellagio, while in 2007 he won the Legends of Poker tournament at the Bicycle Club. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest and most respected no-limit hold em players, as well as a feared opponent in both no-limit and limit hold em side games. He lives in Santa Monica where he is a partner in Anchor Loans, a real estate business.

Bill Robertie has spent his life playing and writing about chess, backgammon, and now poker. He began playing chess as a boy, inspired by Bobby Fischer s feats on the international chess scene. While attending Harvard as an undergraduate, he became a chess master and helped the Harvard chess team win several intercollegiate titles. After graduation, he won a number of chess tournaments, including the United States Championship at speed chess in 1970. He also established a reputation at blindfold chess, giving exhibitions on as many as eight boards simultaneously.

In 1976 he switched from chess to backgammon, becoming one of the top players in the world. His major titles include the World Championship in Monte Carlo in 1983 and 1987, the Black & White Championship in Boston in 1979, the Las Vegas tournaments in 1980 and 2001, the Bahamas Pro-Am in 1993, and the Istanbul World Open in 1994.

He has written several well-regarded backgammon books, the most noted of which are Advanced Backgammon (1991), a two-volume collection of 400 problems, and Modern Backgammon (2002), a new look at the underlying theory of the game. He has also written a set of three books for the beginning player: Backgammon for Winners (1994), Backgammon for Serious Players (1995), and 501 Essential Backgammon Problems (1997).

From 1991 to 1998 he edited the magazine Inside Backgammon with Kent Goulding. He owns a publishing company, the Gammon Press, and lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with his wife Patrice.

Cashing in on the turn and river (or value betting for fun and profit)

The Harrington cash game series makes an excellent addition to any poker player's library. Of course, players must realize that cash game play is not as dynamic or exciting as tournament play (the subject of Harrington's three volume hold em series). To profit in cash game play, you need to be patient, avoid serious mistakes and maximize value on each and every hand you play. There's no larger macro-tournament strategy to keep in mind: you simply play the cards that you're dealt and try to wring whatever value you can from your hands.

In a lot of ways cash game play is more basic than tournament play, though in practice you need a lot more skill to turn a consistent profit. Raw aggression can often compensate for a lack of subtle hand reading skills and value betting in tournament play; raw, untamed aggression in a cash game will get you felted.

Harrington knows his subject well, but he's not an expert cash game player. There have also been many books written on cash game play, starting with Doyle back in the late 70s. So there's not the groundbreaking effect we saw with Harrington's tournament books in these two volumes on cash game play: but as I said with Vol. 1, they're well-worth the price of admission. You can learn a lot about playing the turn and river for maximum value in Vol. 2 here, and that can make all the difference between a winning and losing session. This may not be a must-read, but you'd be hard-pressed to find too many other capable books on no limit hold em cash game play.

I'd also recommend Poker Tips that Pay: Expert Strategy Guide for Winning No Limit Texas Hold em for readers that are looking beyond the Harrington series, for additional hand-based poker strategies and techniques.

First Class Hold'em Books on Cash Games

I am writing this review for both of Harrington's books on cash games.

There are a lot of good, and not so good books on playing Texas Hold'em cash games. Harrington's books, "Harrington on Cash Games", I and II are a couple of the best. Granted, 85% of the series repeat what many others have written, many times. This series is very well written, Harrington's concepts are clearly expressed.

The difference between these and other books are in that 15% extra. For example his discussions on how to play deep, moderate and short stack games. Or how he sizes bets under different circumstances. Discussions like these are where Harrington really separates his books on cash games from most other books.

I would rate this book a notch (abet a very small notch) above David Sklansky and Ed Miller's book "No Limit Hold'em in Theory and Practice", since Harrington's book is a bit easier to read, and concepts are presented a little clearer. Both are great.

This Is the Big One of American English Dictionaries in Paperback and It's Well Edited and Comprehensive, Too!

I have used various editions of Funk and Wagnalls' hardback and paperback dictionaries for many, many years, indeed, for most of, firstly, my adolescence, and, then, my adult life (my present age getting close to 70 years long now!). However, I have made resort to the large Standard and College editions in hardback binding of this trusty dictionary less and less frequently in recent decades; Funk and Wagnalls, while of sterling reliability due to its conservative (so far, I think, I hope, to the present!) approach to lexicography, can be just a tad too stodgy for primary reference: too little slang, just a bit too unbending in some ways. Since the 1980s or so, my preference for the Webster's "New World" college editions in a single hardback volume (always my favourite, anyway, in each and every one of its four major editions thus far), and, to a lesser extent, the American Heritage full and college editions in hardback, finally have usurped the place that Funk and Wagnalls once had for me.

Of course, living in Québec, within the Canadian context, I also use the Chambers, Cassells, and Gage dictionaries of English quite extensively, since American spelling and pronunciation (which, of course, prevail in the dictionaries of Funk and Wagnall, American Heritage, and in any Webster) are not sufficiently close to Commonwealth and Canadian usage. However, I utilise these British and Canadian dictionaries, in fact, mostly for just that, spelling (especially Chambers) and pronunciation (Gage above all), as well, of course, for words and uses that American English does not represent, while I nonetheless prefer the Webster "New World" and American Heritage hardback editions for definitions, usage levels, and etymology. I only add that I am an avid user of dictionaries and make resort to a very wide variety of other dictionaries besides those which I discuss here!

What makes the case different in evaluating single volume paperback dictionaries is that Funk and Wagnalls simply packs the most vocabulary into a compact volume (fatter than most paperback books, dictionaries or otherwise, but still very portable and economical of space needed to keep it at hand and also reasonably legible without undue eye strain) than any other widely published and distributed softcover dictionary. The paperback dictionary editions deriving from the Webster's "New World" and American Heritage Dictionaries are yet more beautifully edited in their compact paperback formats as, of course, they are in hardback editions, but they just do not include a wide enough vocabulary base to suffice verification needs when reading fairly sophisticated book and periodical literature. (This is so despite the fact that their hardback sister editions, of course, are magnificent in those regards!) Another widely-found and very comprehensive paperback dictionary is Scribner-Bantam's (which comes in single volume and in two-volume alternatives, both compact), but the Scribner-Bantam's paperback dictionary sacrifices some features of a full dictionary which Funk and Wagnalls paperback editions manage to retain, so, due to that, Scribner-Bantam's just does not quite measure up to the same standard that Funk and Wagnalls sets.

When I read in a room in which I seldom or never would study, or "on the hoof" from one place to another, it will remain the Funk and Wagnalls paperback dictionary that has my user allegiance!

The Debate is Over!

U.S. opposition to the Kyoto Protocol has been consistent since President Bush panned it in 2001. One problem, in many Americans' eyes, is that it does not demand developing nations reduce greenhouse emissions - it seemed fairer to drafters to ask nations like the U.S. and Canada who consume large amounts of energy for luxuries, to cut back their consumption first. However, the biggest problem was the initial credibility of those claiming global warming was a serious problem.

Now, however, increased data and discussion has essentially resolved the issue in favor of those raising the alarm. Thus, reading "Global Warming" is like reading a mystery while knowing all the while how it turns out.

Normally a good thing to present both sides of an issue; however, debates today too often involve special interests that slant or even lie about data. There is considerable evidence that this has repeatedly occurred regarding the topic of global warming. Those making such false claims then take advantage of "fairness," especially when that does not offer a means of assessing the credibility of opposing claims. "Global Warming" does not do this.

Bottom Line: Cut your reading time in half and only read the chapters concerned about global warming.

This book explains U.S. opposition to the Allende government by highlighting Nixon and Kissinger's imperial disdain for Latin America in general and Chile in particular, their fundamental ignorance of the region, and the influence of the U.S. business community. Qureshi draws on an array of sources, including the Nixon tapes, U.S. and Chilean government documents, and secondary sources to shed new light on a pivotal moment in U.S. history. She also discusses the history and importance of Charles Horman and Frank Teruggi, two North Americans killed by the Chilean military (with possible U.S. government complicity) following the September 11, 1973, coup that overthrew Allende. Excellent Nixon scholarship, terrible Soviet scholarship

Qureshi's intimate knowledge of Nixon's behind the scenes deliberations is informed by thousands of declassified documents with transcripts of Nixon's conversations with advisors and meeting notes. Qureshi specializes in the history of the Nixon administration and correctly observes that US economic interests and Nixon's contempt for Latin-America, racism, insecurity and arrogance played an important role in Nixon's decision to support the 1973 coup.
Where she goes wrong, however, is when she makes the more dangerous and incorrect conclusion that the cold war had little or nothing to do with the decision to form the coup. Not only is this conclusion unsupported by the very source documents she uses, but her lack of Soviet scholarship leads to some serious blindspots in her work. The most glaring omission is that Soviet intelligence documents aren't use at all in the book, despite their relevance to Allende's rise to power and decision-making while President. In 1992 a Soviet spy named Vasili Mitrokhin released a massive trove of classified KGB documents, that included Soviet involvement with European and Latin-American left parties. The KGB played an active role in giving financial assistence to Allende and left parties. The Soviets spent more in Chile than in any other Latin American country outside Cuba. Historian Christopher Andrew, who specializes in the Mitrokhin archive argues that Soviet assistence in the elections probably played a decisive role in Allende's victory with only 36% of the vote. Qureshi not only ignores this, but she also concludes on page 3: "yet in private, Nixon did not blame the Soviet Union for the troubles south of the border" a conclusion unjustified even by someone ignorant of the Mitrokhin archive. The author often engages in either/or thinking, assuming that when a particular viewpoint isn't emphasized in a particular conversation or on the tapes, that the concerns were unimportant to meeting participants. This is evident when she quotes conversations about economic matters in Latin-America, assuming that because explicit links between economic and military matters aren't made by Nixon or Connelly that they themselves were unaware of the linkages. It's clear that Nixon is tailoring his discussions to the interests of the particular advisor he's talking to- focusing on economics with Treasury secretary Connally, speaking in more racist terms with CIA chief Richard Helms, discussing Chile's domestic and international political situation with Kissinger. In her efforts to build a narrative, she often takes snippets out of context and is likely distorting their intended meanings. Because of these blaring blind spots, the book should be seen as a work of left-wing propaganda rather than a legitimate history of the Nixon administration and Chile. Because she quotes heavily from the Nixon tapes, Kissinger's "On Diplomacy" and Kissinger's memoirs, I would recommend that serious readers consider this book as only a first step before going to the source documents themselves. In addition people should also read about the Mitrokhin Archive to learn what the Soviets were doing in order to form a balanced picture of Allende's Chile.

Nixon, Kissinger, and Allende is the riveting story of how the Nixon administration helped the legally and constitutionally elected president of Chile be overthrown by its use of nefarious methods. Of course, the topple was nothing new in Latin America, but a continuation of a policy of intervention since the Monroe Doctrine. The book is but a piece of a larger malicious mosaic that marks US Latin America relations for several centuries, and which is still being played out. This tome is important for those to seek a better understanding of why Latin America is so wary of its neighbor, the northern imperial colossus.

Covering the six years from 1988 to 1994, the book is intended as a general introductory survey and as a sequel to my Soviet Literature in the 1980's: Decade of Transition (Toronto 1989), which investigates the period between 1978 and 1988. - from the preface by the author.

A very much longed-for book on contemporary Russian Literatu

This book on contemporary Russian literature is very valuable, and I am eagerly waiting for a continuation - Russian Literature 1995-2000.
It would have been good, though, if Prof. Shneidman would be so kind as to indicate where the stress in pronunciation of the Russian names would fall, which would be good at least for those who are not native speakers of Russian.
Anyhow, this book raises the reader's interest to keep in touch with the further develeopment of Russian contemporary literature by reading Russian literary journals.

WOW GREAT BOOK TO READ ON ESSENTIAL YOUNG LIVING OILS.

THIS BOOK WAS SENT TO THE COUNTRY OF HONDURAS WHERE A YOUNG SINGLE MOM OF TWO WILL BE LEARNING THE MEDICINAL POWERS OF OILS, AS WELL A SET OF THE 9 OILS THAT ARE USED IN THE RAIN DROP THERAPY WERE SENT TO HER. AS WELL A BOOK BY DAVID STEWARD ON THE HEALING OILS OF THE BIBLE.

THESE TWO BOOKS WERE SENT TO HER AND SHE STATES THE 2 BOOKS WERE A PAGES TURNER.
