Erik's backstory...

Answering many origin questions about Erik & Gil, this book is still pretty fast paced witty plenty of action and magic. No real cussing, extreme gore, or sex, although it does delve a bit into God and gods. Very enjoyable read and a good sequel, although it does feel a bit like it is a backstory converted into a book.

I love magic and fights and adventure. This book has all that and more. Looking forward to the third book. I'm anticipating more of the same. Battling the Sins is going to be another thrill ride. I highly recommend this book.

Lots of action but very oddly slow to me

I really hovered between 3 and 4 stars for this one. This book is basically a looooooooooooong conversation with a wise old gentleman of some paranormal flavor in which we get Erik's backstory, so often alluded to in the first book. It was like an infodump and cheesy action movie rolled into one. Unfortunately the story was very slow. Fight scenes drug on and on and on. It was like watching Erik vs the Terminator with the way the bad guys just seemed to die and then crawled out from under the rubble, made smartass remarks, and started trying to kill him again. I felt like the whole book could have been told in a quarter of the time. Erik and Gil are teenagers during all of this so we don't get any of the adult years of badass assignments and creative fighting. At this point in Erik's life it's just about raw energy and hacking at things. We do learn many important things like how Erik's cat/demon came into his life, why he and Gil are estranged, why he and Gil had to kill his father, and more about his mother. We find out all about how he was trained--both by an evil (Faust) and good (Tenzin) teacher. The only forward momentum in story is how Abi's training is coming, hints that she's crazy powerful, and her earning a powerful weapon of her own. This is about a chapter's worth of the book. I look forward to the next book and hope that it's a return to the dynamic, clever action and the great character interactions of the first book.

it is what it is. like another reviewer said "only dylan can explain this" you can either read deep into his thoughts or think it is mostly rambling. it's really all in the reader's experience. the fact that we can even get a personal glimpse into his mind have this in our possession is great.

Essential for Dylan fans

Dylanophiles have long tired of (..) literary critics saying that Dylan is "not really a poet; this book does something to put the lie to the accusation. It IS poetry, though not in the "conventional" sense. The majority of the book is written in a style of prose poem/poem/prose poem (repeating the cycle for however long the poem is), and then closing the piece with a written letter signed by some character from Dylan's imagination. As you may have surmised, the prose poems are of the type that Dylan wrote for the linear notes to Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. And yes, the poems are in the style of the poems that Dylan wrote for The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another Side. Precious little of it is literal; it is almost wholly written in the rambling, seeming stream-of-consciousness style that Dylan introduced in the aforementioned prose poems. He was highly into writing allegerical fables at that time, and this book abounds in them. Dylan fans will certainly enjoy this book a lot. It gives a peak into his creativity and writing process like nothing else really does. This is Dylan unpolished, not buried beneath the stream of re-writes that produced such masterpieces as "Visions of Johanna." There are references to many of his songs and lyrics within the poetry - whether this came from those, or vice versa, is anyone's guess, but it's a fascinating glimpse into Dylan in any case. You can get something out of these poems. They are fun to read, and have a quick, rolling meter and cadence that all of Dylan's poetic works seem to have, and this makes for interesting and thought-provoking seat-of-the-pants reading. Dylan fans will revel in it. Probably, those who are not already taken with the author will not be converted by this book. This book is actually a less-than-stellar book in the eyes of many (admittedly, by Dylan himself, who held off publishing it for 5 years), and, though interesting and thought-provoking, it is a very ornate and abstract work, without also offering the insights into life that his lyrics have always offered. So the merits of this book for those who are not already Dylan fans is questionable. On the other hand, it is certainly essential for Dylanophiles, and it certainly is a further contribution from Dylan to the field of poetry, and a more legitimate one in the eyes of many. Here's hoping that it helps Bob win the Nobel Prize for Literature that he so geniunely and truly deserves. It is not a cultural opinion, but indeed a fact, that Dylan did more for poetry than anyone else in the 20th century - at least in the sense of bringing it to the masses. And he certainly re-defined popular music as we know it. This book is a further gem in his canon, and helps show a small part of the reason for why Dylan means so much to so many different people.

As a person who has dealt with suicide ideation all my life, and understand why I have this issue. Alot of it is from early childhood trauma and emotional flashbacks that can hit you when something triggers it. In this book I felt like there was alot of misinformation about various aspects on the subject. I would not recommend this book as of real value to anyone wishing to understand suicide. There is a book I had found when I was younger that gave some really great in depth insight but it still didn't delve into certain areas but it was a great book. It's called the noonday demon.

Disappointing book. It only talks about suicide as if it were a mental illness. Well, some people get to that conclusion through a logical reasoning. It's a choice. The difficult part is, why these people think like that? What can we, as a society, do, so more sensitive people can cope with such a difficult burden?
I just think it's sad someone has spent so long researching and still hasn't understood that many people don't have any mental issues. They just can't stand life. Because we all agree, that life is hard.

About the Author
Mr. Krapohl polygraph career started in the private sector in 1979, conducting testing for attorneys, police departments and commercial firms in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1985 he was recruited by the US government to perform polygraph testing for intelligence and security purposes, and Mr. Krapohl conducted many significant and highly sensitive cases during that time. Ultimately he became involved in government research on the polygraph, which led to his assignment in 1997 to the US government's polygraph education and research organization at Ft. Jackson, SC. Working among leading scientists in this area afforded Mr. Krapohl new opportunities to investigate the potential, and potential limits, of the polygraph and to explore other technologies that might augment or replace it. His primary focus as a researcher was the development of best practices, and the use of empirically based methodologies. His work led to, among other advances, a polygraph algorithm now used on most computer polygraphs. His expansive terminology reference for polygraphy is the standard in the field. He was a member of the team that validated the Preliminary Credibility Assessment Screening System, a technology now a major component of force protection for the US military. Mr. Krapohl helped craft the charge given the National Research Council during its survey of the literature on the validity of polygraph screening in 2003. Mr. Krapohl made technical presentations on the government's use of credibility assessment technologies to workshops hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation. Following six very productive years in the Research Branch Mr. Krapohl was designated the facility's Deputy Director. He retired from government service in 2015. In his career he has authored more than 100 published research papers, general interest pieces, technical articles and book chapters on credibility assessment and related areas. Outside of his government service, Mr. Krapohl was the Editor-in-Chief for the publications of the American Polygraph Association (APA), 1997-2003 and 2007-2014. He served as APA President in 2006. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for his research and presentations.

Ms. Shaw began her career in polygraph in 2000 while employed with the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, a state government agency established to oversee certified police officers and provide pre-employment testing services for over 400 law enforcement entities. During her 14 years with the Council she served as an examiner, supervisor and polygraph school director for the state. She additionally established her own polygraph company, Shaw Polygraph Services, Inc., in 2006 where she administered specific issue and post-conviction sex offender tests and engaged in various educational and consulting endeavors to include quality control services and curriculum development. Ms. Shaw has provided numerous lectures to a variety of state, national and international polygraph associations, as well as American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited schools. She has also served as a consultant to diverse local and government agencies in the U.S., South America and Asia-Pacific regions. In addition to managing her private polygraph company she is also currently the owner and co-director of the
National Polygraph Academy based out of Lexington, KY. The school is accredited by the APA and recognized by the American Association of Police Polygraphists. The school provides professional training to law enforcement, government and private sector students in various locations in the U.S. and abroad. From early on in her career, Ms. Shaw has been a strong advocate of education and professional practices in the field of polygraphy. She is the recipient of awards for her presentations and participation in committees responsible for publishing model policies for post-conviction sex offender testing, law enforcement/public service screening as well as the APA's 2011 Meta-Analytic Survey of Criterion Accuracy of Polygraph Techniques. Ms. Shaw served as President of the American Polygraph Association in 2012 and held other board positions for 6 years. She has also served as president and vice-president of the Kentucky Polygraph Association and is a member of additional professional polygraph associations including the American Association for Police Polygraphists and the American Society for Testing and Materials International.

My take on Fundamentals of Polygraph Practice

I have been a Polygraph Examiner for nearly forty 40 years. Since 2001,I have been inspecting Polygraph programs (schools) around the world for their accreditation in the APA (American Polygraph Association).
I believe that this book contains all you need to know and more about this profession and should be required reading in all Polygraph programs.
It is a great book written by two former APA Presidents, top notch individuals, Polygraph Examiners , lecturers and researchers.
I highly recommend this book.

The best book

Absolutely fantastic book. I like it so much. The main reasons are:
- the book is encyclopedia of lie detection. It contains almost all issues,
- I`m fond of history of PDD (psychophysiological detection of deception), this part provides not only facts, but the spirit of lie detection,
- and I'm absolutely impacted by scientific part of the book. It gives not only terms and calculations but highly useful tables which aid validate most PDD methods.
I'm still in reading and quite sure that other parts of the book are perfect. This price for the book is really coincide for a such good book. So I'm a happy customer... The issue is probably in my country possible buy this book quite cheaper by Google Play. Not sure that Google Play is a fair seller, for example they sell The Polygraph and Lie Detection as e-book!!! It is free for downloading from NAP.
Sorry for off top. I like this book and highly recommend it.

The book material is an excellent resource and well written. A comprehensive book taking note of the current state of Polygraphy was long over due. I would have given it 5 stars except for a frustrating problem: I ordered the first book and as I was reading it, several pages came loose from the binding. Great text

I've used both Halliday and Giancoli, though the latter I used as a Freshman back in 2002 for first semester physics and the former I used as a post-bac student in 2006/07 when I completed the second semester.

I do have to strongly disagree with previous reviewers that the problems are of a difficulty beyond that of the chapters. I had an amazing teacher, but often I found that a problem wasn't exactly like one he went over in class--which is a good thing as the only way to learn physics meaningfully is to spend long hours working away and trying to figure out a problem until that "aha!" moment. There really is no better way to grasp the fundamentals--and this is extremely important depending on your major (such as engineering).

I also found the text to be lighthearted--something you rarely find in texts these days. There are many problems that made me quietly laugh while in the library, often involving penguins or a jumping armadillo (when I later TA'd physics, my students and I had a discussion on whether armadillo's can actually jump; none of us knew the answer...)

This text really helped me learn physics--I missed two lectures and I was able to still do the problems assigned and understand the material covered on my own, albeit at a much greater investment of time compared to how it would have been had I made it to the lectures. I will agree the text is difficult, but that is the way calculus-based physics should be.

Physics is only ever easy for two reasons--one, because you're following cookie-cutter formulas and the material simply isn't testing your knowledge well enough. Two--because you've labored over and over (or maybe not too long if you're an Einstein) and understand the material and can apply it to a situation you have never seen before, with ease. After you have that understanding, the simple beauty of the physical laws of nature will amaze you.

And then when you take quantum mechanics/physical chemistry you find out a lot of what you learned in introductory physics was basically crap and that the world is much more complicated, and equally more amazing. But the "crap" you learned is good enough for 99.9% of problems you will encounter in everyday life.

Stick to the older edition

Ok the bad rating isn't really about the material inside the book, because that in itself is as good as any other textbook and is really insightful. The rating is more for the lack of updates and the price of this book. For 170 you get pretty much the same things as the 8th edition, with only changes in the problem numbering and their variables. That's it. I have both 8th and 9th editions. The ONLY reason I bought the 9th edition was because of the problem specific questions that were asked in my class that came directly from the book. This edition doesn't even come with the WileyPlus code which is one of the best parts and has so many resources such as videos and detailed explanations. Don't buy this version of the book. Buy a cheap 8th edition and a WileyPlus code if you can.
