It worked for my daughter

My daughter raised her SAT score in Math considerably (about 80 points) after going through this book. She thought it was very helpful. Her problem was that since she had taken Algebra in 8th grade and Geometry in 9th, she had forgotten some basic things that the SAT tests in Math. It also helped her in some advanced areas. My wife helped her a bit (she's an economist w/ big math skills) and she also liked the book.

I got these for my 17yo son and with the help of his books and Dr. Steve, he want from 550 to 720. College is expensive, not getting into the right one even more so...these books are worth every penny.

At the end of the day you get out of it what you put in so that is an important component but these books provide your kid with foundational expertise, structured thought and practice that is invaluable.

As a student facing the SATs, I found this very informative. I like how Dr. Warner, discusses methods to use that can be applied to all problems which opens the opportunity open for scoring higher. I really enjoy the multiple ways he solves problems, which reinforces the idea of how much of a variety there is to solve a math problem. I highly recommend his books for math SAT prep!

I just wanted to point out that this book can be obtained for free online. In fact it specifically says on the cover page "For Free Distribution Only (NOT FOR SALE)."

Nice Manual

Ajahn Buddhadasa is a controversial figure in the annals of 20th century Theravada Buddhism, even having his works banned for a time in conservative strongholds like Burma. Still, I liked this book. It's nothing new if you are familiar with the Anapanasati sutta from the Pali Canon but Buddhadasa Bhikkhu turns aspects of the famous sutta into a system of training for the "serious beginner." If you're not serious about Buddhism or meditation then I don't think you ought to buy this since it will probably either bore you to death or frustrate you. However, if you really want to learn breath meditation and don't expect any serious results overnight or even over the course of a month or more I think it's a great book. I love it, but if you're into Buddhist scholarship and have no faith in meditation or Enlightenment you'll be wasting your money. There is no scholarship here, just a forest monks instructions on meditation from a life lived practicing it.

Excellent book for serious beginners or more advanced students

This book is a deep exploration of Insight Meditation based on the Anapanasati Sutra. It is very detailed and contains quite a few Pali terms, but it goes beyond most popular books in depth. It was translated from Thai and is not the smoothest book in the world to read. However, it covers lots of ground in a short space and is a good supplment to other texts such as Breath by Breath by Larry Rosenberg.

Larry Rosenberg's book covers a lot of the same material, but is geared more toward a Western audience and doesn't get as deeply into the Pali terminology, the underlying philosophy, etc. I see the two books as useful and complimentary. Together they constitute a good comprehensive introduction to Insight Meditation.

A world expert on New Guinea's fauna, Flannery has discovered 20 new species during his two decades of research. Terrific thunderstorms and aircraft mishaps rattle Flannery during his travels. This energetic fusion of natural science and anthropology caused the Times Literary Supplement to declare that in Flannery "Australia has found its own Stephen Jay Gould." Indeed, Flannery's book is, like Gould's work, erudite and informing. But Flannery (The Future Eaters, 1994), an Australian biologist who specializes in mammalogy, gives us a much more personal take in this memoir of his scientific and cross-cultural adventures during 15 expeditions to New Guinea?undertaken in order to research the many species of mammals that exist on this large island, which he refers to as "one of the world's last frontiers." His accounts of crossing the rugged island terrain and enduring onslaughts from snakes, bees, flies and mosquitoes are vivid yet understated. During his explorations, Flannery documented many new species of mammals and discovered the presence of a bat that had previously been considered extinct. The best parts of the book are those in which Flannery tells of his forays into remote villages. His descriptions of the indigenous peoples he met and worked with are sympathetic and often very funny (with the humor frequently at his own expense), particularly the tales of the cannibals of Yominbip and Betavip. Flannery accepted funding from the Indonesian PT Freeport mining company, which operates in Irian Jaya, but that doesn't stop him from voicing his concern that the presence of Freeport has led to civil unrest, violence, racial tensions and environmental havoc. The title comes from New Guinea Pidgin; referring to a first step, it means "to go on a journey." Readers would do well to follow Flannery on this one.

YA-New Guinea's myriad mountain ranges and steep river valleys fostered the isolation of its peoples and resulted in the development of hundreds of languages. Pidgin English is the one language the different tribes have in common, and "throwim way leg" means to go on what may be a long journey by thrusting out your leg to take that first step. Flannery steps out again and again, chronicling his major explorations of Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya from 1981 to 1996. He was especially interested in tree kangaroos, and went to great lengths to pursue and document new species of these elusive and endangered mammals. To explore New Guinea is to scramble up and down mountains, and enter caves full of skeletons, all the while enduring a meager diet of rats and other small animals. In each tribal village visited, Flannery spent much time and effort getting to know at least a few of the inhabitants, and made an effort to learn at least a little of their language. Consequently, he was welcomed wherever he went, in a land where outsiders are feared for their exploitation of both the peoples and their homeland. Flannery is a thoughtful chronicler of the lives of the indigenous peoples and an entertaining guide to this fascinating corner of the world. YAs interested in biological sciences, in ecology and conservation, and especially in exploration will find this book a great resource. Maps are provided of each area explored, and the color photographs show some of the people and animals encountered.

Heights of discovery

If Tim Flannery isn't the luckiest biologist in the world, then perhaps he's the hardest working. He possesses a spirit of adventure that may exceed both. His twenty years of exploring the mysteries of New Guinea are superbly outlined and related in this engaging account. Although a mammalogist by profession, his interests range far beyond any academic discipline. We follow his efforts to meet and gain acceptance by the remote peoples of the New Guinea highlands. They are a diverse lot, and every new contact is fraught with uncertainty. He introduces us to the teasing pleasures of New Guinea pidgin, a language adopted by indigineous peoples to cross the nearly 1 000 languages that exist on the island.
Throwim' Away Leg, New Guinean pidgin for a journey, is an appropriate title for this book. Flannery's 15 long-term expeditions took him over most of the island, meeting the people, tracking animals and assessing the changes in the ecology. It is difficult, in this jet travel age to comprehend the impact of "remote people," but Flannery has done it. He's adept at sharing the wonder he felt in his travels. We feel his fears, his joys of discovery, his sadness at the incursion of industrial civilization in an unprepared land. Flannery's account is given with an astonishing detachment. He recognizes the needs of both the indigenous people and the invaders. Cannibalism, so abhorrent to "civilized" readers, is placed in its true framework as viewed by the New Guinean mountain peoples. He's aware of the population pressures on local resources among the tribes, not excusing, but imparting rare understanding of the reality of life in wilderness.
The author's love of wildlife is made clear throughout the book. An encounter with three-metre-long python that tried desperately to throttle him is related with incredible compassion. One can only sympathize with the pilot and passengers who shared the cockpit of a small aircraft with it on its journey to Port Moresby. Flannery's real feelings, however, are for the varieties of tree kangaroos living on the island. He asserts the high point of his travels was the classification of a rare black and white species of this creature. High point, indeed! Three
thousand metres up in the New Guinean highlands, local hunters brought him the chewed remains of two "Dingisios" - enough to identify and describe this rare animal.
Flannery's enthusiasms and vivid desriptive powers make this book an unforgettable read. His descriptions of the impact of outsiders, from both East and West, portray a land under immense stress. Not only Western mining and lumber companies, who have seared the landscape with roads, mines and felling, but Indonesia's settlement programmes come under his penetrating gaze. He recognizes their needs, but urges better forms of accomodation are required. The biological story is conveyed well integrated with social, political and environmental issues. An all-encompassing study, this book will give the reader many fresh insights and topics for further reflection.

Exciting and sometimes hilarous natural history book

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful book! In it, mammalogist Tim Flannery regales us with tales from his many years in New Guinea, searching for new species of mammals on the island, the second largest in the world. A difficult island to work in - highly mountainous; extremely few roads, most villages so isolated that they can only be reached by small planes flying to landing strips hacked out of the jungle; parts of it some of the rainiest spots on earth, some areas receiving 11 meters or more of rain a year; possessing many dangerous animals ranging from crocodiles to snakes to huge spiders; tropical diseases and parasites a real problem in many areas (including malaria and scrub typhus, from which Flannery almost died from when bit by an infected tick) � Flannery had his work cut out for them as he spent over two decades on the island, both in the eastern half, the independent nation of Papua New Guinea, and the western section, Irian Jaya, part of Indonesia.
Flannery is a highly accomplished scientist, having discovered 16 new species of mammals in Melanesia, many of them in New Guinea. Many of these and others are described in the book, and make for fascinating reading. We meet the Black-tailed Giant-rat, the bite from its two centimeter long razor sharp incisors much feared by the inhabitants of the island. The Three-striped Dasyure, a vividly marked rat-sized marsupial predator, one of New Guinea's few mammals active during daylight hours. The Snow Mountains Robin, one of the rarest birds in the world, found in the high alpine regions of the Meren Glacier in Irian Jaya, one of the very few equatorial glaciers in the world. _Antechinus, a small carnivorous marsupial notable in that the male only lives for 11 months, existing only to breed. The diminutive, dingo-like New Guinea singing dog, which arrived in the islands some 2,000 years ago. The six o'clock cicada, a tremendously loud insect that received its name from its trill it emits roughly 6am and 6pm daily. The famous Birds of Paradise, breathtaking in their beauty, several species of which are extremely rare. He also describes the Long-fingered Triok, a black and white skunk smelling possum with the fourth finger of each hand a great elongated probe for finding insect larvae; you never know what he is going to find next lurking in the barely explored misty peaks and dripping jungles of the island.

Three of the most remarkable animals are ones that Flannery discovered or in one case rediscovered. One is _Maokopia ronaldi_, an extinct marsupial herbivore that once dwelt in the high mountain forests. Panda-like in appearance, size, and probably habits, Flannery named this new genus and species from fossils he found in Irian Jaya. Bulmer's Fruit-bat, a bat though extinct for 12,000 years, the largest cave dwelling bat in the world, Flannery was elated to have found them alive in extremely rugged western Papua New Guinea. The one though that Flannery is the most proud of discovering was the Dingiso, a new species of tree-kangaroo he found in the alpine areas of Irian Jaya, a beautiful black and white animal, surprising tame, threatened but fortunately partially protected by native taboos against harming them.
However, as remarkable as all of that is, one could argue that the real stars of this book are the people of New Guinea, particularly the indigenous Melanesian peoples that Flannery spends a great deal of time with and clearly loves. Much of his time researching in the field he was based out of the villages of such people as the Wopkaimin, the Telefol, and the Goilala where he became fast friends with many throughout the island, in both countries, viewing them not as savage barbarians, but as noble, often quite kind people, their older generation vast repositories of cultural and natural history lore. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the books were the many stories about life in those villages, some of the tales tragic, others heartwarming, and many hilarious.
Particularly fascinating was what he wrote about the history of cannibalism on the island. Apparently it did exist in the not too distant past, actually in the living memory of some of the villagers he encountered. Though not an every day occurrence by any means, cannibalism was an important part of New Guinea life; indeed, one group Flannery spent some time with, the Miyanmin, were once avid raiders, and actually referred to the neighboring Atbalmin people as �bokis es bilong miplea,� which more or less translates into something like �our refrigerator.� Though cannibalism is now a thing of the past, its effects are still felt he writes, as villages once got some of their population from raids of other villages, the adults of that village were consumed and the children raised as their own; now, that is no longer a source of new people for villages and some are facing some depopulation as a result.
Flannery sounds several cautionary notes in his book. Several species of New Guinea mammals and birds are in serious danger of extinction from over hunting. Though New Guinea is still a land largely without roads, more and more appear all the time, opening up virgin lands for hunters, loggers, and miners. Indeed in Irian Jaya the latter two are devastating ever larger sections of the island; the massive Freeport mine, which exports over ten million dollars worth of minerals daily, has destroyed large sections of forest with waste mine tailings.
He also worries about the future of the people, particularly in Irian Jaya. He believes that in an attempt to make that land more like the rest of Indonesia it is causing not only environmental damage but also cultural damage. Indeed there are concerns over human rights abuses in Irian Jaya, of dissidents disappearing, of remote villagers forced to wear modern clothing and abandon their pig eating culture by distant Muslim politicians, who often find native culture abhorrent.

Man and fellow mammals in a rugged land

This is a fascinating look at the mammals (most poignantly,humans) in the forests and caves of New Guinea. Flannery takes usalong on 15 years of searching for both living and fossil traces of everything from tree kangaroos to bats. But the compelling feature of the book is his contact with the isolated villagers, whose ways are as interesting--and imperilled--as the rarer wildlife that Flannery seeks. New Guinea is near the equator, but its highest peaks are in the 14,000 to 16,000 foot range. It is rugged. The island is filled with caves, dense life-filled forests, swamps, and a daunting array of diseases and pests. Peter Matthiessen took us there years ago in his Under the Mountain Wall. Some old ways prevail, but the gun, roads, mines, politics, and exposure to western ways are taking their toll on both man and wildlife. Flannery has a self-depricating manner that reminds of the Canadian naturalist-author Farley Mowat. What next? you think as you read from low-key adventure to low-key adventure. Along the way he teaches you too about those tree kangaroos, rats, bats, bandicoots, wallabies, etc.

Outstanding

Wonderful cookbook! The writing, photos, and organization are top-notch. Overall, working with the "Handbook" is like having a friend teaching and helping out in the kitchen. As noted in the first review, the book is about way more than just sandwiches - some history, family stories, the hunt for perfect bahn mi bread, and best of all, new ways of thinking about food. Ms Nguyen breaks down the delicious bahn mi sandwich into simple elements - crunch of the crust, softness of the crumb, a bit of fat, a umami blast, unctuous fillings, cool and crisp veggie toppings - in a way that I was able to carry over into my other cooking. I was thinking of her meatball bahn mi as I tweaked my usual spaghetti with meatballs recipe for dinner last night - adding finely chopped cilantro stems to the meat, coating the meatballs with panko, and a dash of anchovy paste to the sauce. I bring this up to show how this is a little book that makes one's culinary imagination take flight, as a great cookbook should.

More down-to-earth, Ms Nguyen also gives myriad little kitchen hints that I found immediately useful - how to keep cilantro and how to cut it to stay fresh, squeeze quick pickles after salting to get them crisp, how to refresh bread. Not to mention how many of her recipes can be simply transposed onto a bed of rice noodles or lettuce for a delicious meal. If you love to cook, then don't pass up this book!

banh mi handbook delivers the yum!

I've been a fan of the author, following her lovely and delicious blog for some time. This book follows through on what I love about her work -- it's accessible for a home cook, the photography is delightful, the writing is clear, and I'm eager to get in the kitchen and try things out for me and my family.

This book features recipes for omnivores, meat-eaters, and vegetarians. Also, because of the way the book is structured, one could easily turn many of these sandwich fillings into main dishes for a non-sandwich meal. In my family, we eat a lot of rice, and I'll definitely be serving things like Crispy Drunken Chicken, Shrimp in Caramel Sauce, and Maggi Steaks with or without bread.

But the bread! She includes a recipe for banh mi rolls, but I haven't got to try it yet. When the weather cools down, I'll give it a try. It's written for a heavy-duty stand mixer, which I do not have, but Notes include instructions on how to work it by hand. Probably it would be a bit imposing for someone without a mixer or some bread-making experience; it is not, however, more complicated-looking than recipes I've done before, and it requires no special equipment beyond a spray bottle.

There is also a recipe for bao-like buns, or steamed bread, in the "alternative banh mi" chapter. That chapter also features a recipe for lettuce wraps and a salad, perfect for warmer weather meals.

Also included is a section on condiments, such as homemade mayo in several variations and some other sauces, and quick pickle recipes. They are refrigerator pickles and as such do not require any special canning techniques.

The section which may see the least use in my house is the one on cold cuts; this is not because the recipes look bad, however. To me they look amazing, and I'll be trying some of the sausages...but I'm probably the only one in the house who would love the pâté with chicken or pork, let alone the headcheese terrine. I'll probably make them anyway, at least once, since I'm the cook; if I'm lucky, my housemates will enjoy them too. People with more adventurous families or housemates may get more mileage out of them. (I slightly envy them.)

All in all, this is a cookbook I'm happy to have added to my collection, and I'm looking forward to adding its contents to my regular cooking rotation.

Ultimate Guide to Banh Mi

Sandwiches are my favorite things to eat. I love all kinds of sandwiches. When I came across this little gem, The Banh Mi Handbook: Recipes for Crazy-Delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches,
I just had to have it. I had no idea what banh mi was, however, the attractive design and the delicious appearing cover art immediately piqued my interest.

Banh mi is a “twist on the French snack of pate and bread”, created more than 100 years ago by Vietnamese street vendors. Banh mi sandwiches have their own kind of spreads and sauces, and can be created using a variety of meats or vegetables.

I love how this book provides much more than just recipes. It provides the story of these sandwiches along the way. The recipes are clearly written, though a little intimidating to the beginner, and beautifully photographed.

Andrea Nguyen, the books author, clearly lays out each sandwich component. The recipes start with the bread, how to make it at home, or what to look for at the store. Then it proceeds to the “spreads”. Nguyen goes into great detail to describe and explain how to make the one-of-a-kind sauces that banh mi is known for. Then she gets to the heart of the sandwich with individual sections devoted to cold cuts, chicken, seafood, pork and beef, and vegetarian.

This beautiful volume is a must have for any sandwich connoisseur. This book is complete in all things banh mi.

Frustrating and poorly organized

This one's going back. They need an editor. On nearly every page the Figures that illustrate what's being described are on the opposite or next page?! Screenshots are not clear, and there are no helpful images showing where the drop-down menus are or zoomed-in shots to help locate tools, menus, or settings. This is a book that was rushed to press and it looks like it. I bought it because the T of C looked comprehensive and the review seemed positive. Turns out it was probably written by the publisher. Spend your money on another manual.

Over that last three decades I have bought dozens of computer books. Most have been graphic design. If I put all the books in a pile from best at the top to worst at the bottom I would have to dig a hole to place this book. I just started learning Maya and you say this book is for beginners who need help navigating the gigantic cacophony of menus that make up this wonderful software. Ok so you tell me to select Animate Ghost Selected Options menu. Ok so how am I going to find that command???? You cant add one simple sentence to guide me to find this command. Throughout this entire book I spend hours wandering thru the menus of Maya trying to find the one simple click on your tutorials when all you had to do is add a few words to guide me. And all the pics for the tutorials are on the next page. You have to flip back and forth!! Ok so I have never posted a bad review on anything in my life because I believe that tolerance is a virtue. But this lack of effort or respect to people who are trying to better themselves in the creative, graphics world has motivated me to express my frustration. Oh yea you also wasted my hard earned money!!!! Sorry!!

I'd heard about the book from a conservative friend who read about it in the New York Times. He was seething over the idea and just hated this Reed, who he called a Marxist. A few weeks later, I was talking to an actual Marxist, who also was seething over Reed's novel. So, being a reasonable fellow, I decided to take a look. And I loved it. Totally rational assesment of what's going on. A must read.

The future of Animal Farm is sub-prime home loans for all and sequined mangers--Animal Fair! Need I say more? I do. John Reed is wicked smart. He's wicked. And smart. And not wrong. When every young girl dreams of becoming the next big dancing chicken, and the pigs are still running the show, it's time to be very afraid and seriously funny.

ahead of its time...?

It's really not ahead of its time, but this book will one day be recognized for its very accurate depiction of contemporary society. I'm still baffled that it is not discussed in more forums/schools/universities. But I imagine, at some point, it will be. So, be ahead of the curve, read it now. Even if you hate it, you will enjoy figuring out why you hate it.

Morgan, aka the Tornado, has a unique talent for messing up and getting into trouble. Normal teens might get away with some of her mishaps, but not the President's daughter. Since she's in the limelight, some of her escapades actually become news.

She's just lost her school's presidential race. She's trying to juggle her boyfriend, schoolwork, and a best friend all while under intense security scrutiny. When her security detail switches, she finds herself developing feelings for her Secret Service bodyguard.

Morgan's also having a hard time communicating with her mother. Their talks are always interrupted with special meetings and phone calls. It seems like her mother has time for everyone in the world, except her only daughter. When her mother needs to address a vital situation, Morgan fills in as the President of the United States.

While Morgan simply wants to live a normal life, is it possible to have average experiences given that she lives in the White House? Or will she adjust and learn to like the advantages that come with her mother's station?

Cassidy Calloway writes an expose of a first daughter's life filled with hilarious moments, a little romance, and saving the world one meeting at a time. Morgan's adventures are not to be missed.

Fun and exciting!

What a riot! Morgan Abbott is appropriately nicknamed the Tornado by her hunky secret service guy. If it can go wrong, it will for Morgan, daughter of the first-ever female President. We're talking skirt-falling-down-while-on-stage, paparazzi-photos-of-lopsided-boobs, allergy-attack-at-the-Worst-Possible-Moment kind of disasters. The misadventures are funny, but Morgan's thoughts and comments are funnier.

Cassidy Calloway has created a character who is a walking disaster but who handles it all gracefully and with a sense of humor. After all, having the President as your mother teaches a girl to be prepared. And prepared she must be if she is going to pull off the big switch, covering for her mom while she does some presidential negotiation out of town. Can Morgan pull it off, or will this be her biggest disaster yet?

I won't tell you what happens. I will say I laughed. A lot. Out loud. Throw in some yummy guys, a dash of international intrigue and some white chocolate gingersnaps, and you've got Confessions of a First Daughter.

Confessions is fun. It's exciting. I can't wait to see what Cassidy Calloway comes up with next.

Confessions Of A First Daughter

My Thoughts: Have you ever seen the movie First Daughter starring Katie Holmes? Confessions Of A First Daughter reminded me a lot of that movie. In other words, I loved it! Reading this book made me want to watch First Daughter (which I already own). We meet Morgan Abbott who is the President of the United States daughter. She is 18 and just wants to be normal, not be covered with media attention all the time. There is always attention on her to be on her best behavior. She has a best friend named Hannah who is always there for her and would drop anything she's doing at the drop of a hat for Morgan. She isn't best friends with Morgan because of who she is either, she is very sincere and a real friend. Morgan also has a boyfriend named Konner. You could see from the get go he was just dating her for the popularity factor. He thought it made him look good. To me, he was a creep. Morgan also runs for class president and of course things don't go as planned for her. Trouble seems to follow her around and she even loses her pants, and has dilemma's all around.

Enter her mother, the president. She is a busy women and needs Morgan's help. Morgan pretends to be her for a little while. Yes, she looked that much like her!

Now on to my favorite character, Max. Max was a 20 year old guy who just happened to be a secret service agent. I could tell from minute one I was going to love him. And did I? Yes, Yes, Yes! I would love to be protected by Max. Morgan dislikes Max at first, because why does she need a new secret service agent, whats wrong with her old one and why does this new guy have to be so young and kinda cute? Every time Max called Morgan "The Tornado" I would bust out in a burst of giggles.

Max and Morgan do spend lots of time together, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. I am so excited to read the 2nd book! Does Morgan win class president? Does she get caught impersonating her mother? What happens with Konner and Max? Read this one to find out!

Overall: Honestly, there is nothing serious about Confessions Of A First Daughter. Yes, there is a plot and there are real situations throughout the book (the deal with Africa, etc) but this book is meant to be fun, romantic, and a book to make you smile and have fun with it. It highly succeeds.

Cover: Love it! Look at her shoes, so pretty! But once, I saw the cover for the 2nd one, I was even more amazed!
