Cook's book is a tour de force. John Granger Cook is the heir apparent of the great Martin Hengel (Judaism and Hellenism) and he wrote this book at Hengel's behest. Since Cook is a classicist as well as a New Testament scholar, his evinces his unparalleled mastery of the classical Greco-Roman sources. His argument is that Christianity embodied a radically subversive movement that undermined the very essence of civilized life under imperial Rome; the festivities and other activities bound up with the worship of the myriads of pagan deities, and on whose favor the emperors believed their Empire and their personal and public fortunes rested. Having studied this subject all my life, I was forcibly taken aback at the realization that Cook is right on this point. The Christians did not mean to subvert, or even intend to subvert the Greco-Roman. After all, none other than St. Paul was a proud Roman citizen. Nonetheless, it was the Christians' faithful adherence to their stringent, monotheistic doctrine that led to the gradual abandonment of the great temples as the numbers of Christians increased, and brought the new religion and its impact to the attention of honest and conscientious officials such as Pliny and the Emperor Trajan. Despite massive crimes like that of Nero against the nascent Christian community in Rome, later leaders only gradually because aware of the seriousness of the threat, and the persecutions increased. Cook has given us a narrative an analytic masterpiece, that even laymen can read and understand.

Excerpt: It is only an analogy, but in a sense the subject matter in the pages that follow is as important to New Testament studies as axioms are to the geometer. One example will suffice. It is unnecessary to list the New Testament scholars who have axiomatically assumed the existence of a Domitianic persecution of the Christian church. One could compare that assumption, itself based on very thin historical data, to Euclid's faith in his parallel postulate. That postulate serves every high school geometer well, but has been dispensed with by several famous geometers, with important implications for many fields of study including philosophy, physics, and mathematics. The Neronian and Trajanic persecutions, likewise, are "axioms" in the field of New Testament research. We can dispense with Domitian's persecution, but the other two are of central importance for understanding early Christianity."
