Too long sentences, many typos

While the idea of the book is great (simple texts for the beginning readers), the actual content of the book seems not be thought over carefully.
The sentences often are too long, with too many punctuation marks: "А вот кот идет по дороге, посмотри, какой хвост красивый у кота, большой, пушистый!" (Page 14)
Another frustrating detail: sometime the author uses a letter "Ё" and sometimes not. For example, there are two words besides each other in the sentence (page 10): "Ёжик несет". Well, my child, who is learning Russian as a Foreign language, reads it as it written... and it is wrong.
And finally, there are few typos in the texts: "Мальчик Саша очень хороший. Она всегда слушает маму и папу." (Page 45). Do I need to comment on this one?

There is not a big choice of books for children learning Russian as a Foreign language in the US (please share the info if you know where get good RFL books for children). Naturally, I was excited when I ordered this book.
My daughter did read all the texts; she finished the book. I had to draw dots above letter "E" to make it "Ё", I manually divided long sentences into two and three short ones, so my child could better understand the meaning of the sentnence. Would I recommend it? ... When you do not have a choice, maybe... But I personally am not considering any more purchases from this author.

Wondeful book!! Highly recommended!!

I'm thrilled to find such a great book! There are so few Russian language books available that are not dry, boring textbooks - and almost none designed specifically for children. The texts are interesting and engaging, so kids can follow the stories even if they don't understand every word. My daughters (9 & 13) love this book and the activities book, and I like that it can be used again and again as you learn more about the language. It can be used simply for translation and reading exercises, but you can also go back to texts you have already translated to learn and practice using many forms of Russian grammar: conjugation, plural forms, cases, etc. I think that we will use this book again and again as our Russian language skills improve. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with children learning Russian, but also for adults - I am also a Russian language student and I love this book!

Not Romance, Fantasy

This was a horrible horrible book. I could not get over the betrayal and the writer really does not adequately IMHO address the issue. I don't understand how the hero could expect girl to forgive him, much less take him back. The only reason the girl would take him back after he slept w/ her best friend, dump her at the alter and make her lose her baby would be if she had no self-esteem of her own. I can understand (though far fetched) her staying friends with this man but to take him back was just too hard to swallow. I would never, even if it was free, recommend this book. It was frustrating and I just wanted everyone in the book to just die. I hated everyone, even the kid!!! Seriously, it was that bad.

p.s. the sex scenes sucked too

DREARY AND DEPRESSING

SPOILERS AHEAD......Basically this is the story of Troy who nine years prior cheated on his fiancée Bree with her best friend Meg. When Meg turns out to be pregnant, he elopes with her and they marry. He only tells Bree after, and then only by phone. By sheer coincidence Bree was going to tell Troy she was pregnant herself. Instead she left town, but lost the baby at three months pregnant.

Present day and Bree has returned home for her sisters wedding. Of course she runs into Troy. Who had lost Meg in a road traffic accident fours years before. But he berates Bree for not attending the funeral. After all both he and Meg had apologised.
Troy never knew about Bree's pregnancy or miscarriage, she never told him.

What a shambolic mess this story is. The reader is never shown anything that happened in the past. All we get are small remembered snippets of conversations. The main story that is set in the present is weak, very little happens. The characters are shallow and self absorbed. I found it very difficult to relate to them in any way. Nothing happens except Troy constantly blames Bree for leaving town, and he can't understand why Bree who was madly in love with him wouldn't want to hang round and watch him play happy ever after with her best friend. As for Bree she should have told him she was pregnant. It might have made this a more interesting tale. And just to top it all off, Bree's father tells her that when Meg got pregnant he was the one who told Troy to marry her. But then as her father was a cheater himself what else can you expect. With family like that who needs enemies.
If I could have given this no stars I would have. First and last read for me by this author. Don't waste your money.

Always a Bridesmaid

It's been nine years since Breanna Parker has been home, but her sister's wedding leaves her no choice but to return to the place where her heart was broken. Troy Youngwolf has never stopped loving Breanna, but a youthful drunken mistake forced him to marry her best friend. Something that Breanna has never forgiven. But he's a widower now with a daughter and he's determined that Breanna give him another chance. Breanna can't wait for the wedding to be over so that she can get out of town as quickly as possible and away from Troy. Although she still has feelings for Troy, she can't get over his betrayal and no matter what he does or how he tries to explain, she simply wants to leave. Preferably before he breaks her heart again.

I have to say, I usually really, really enjoy Elaine Hopper. As soon as this came across for review I wanted it. However Always a Bridesmaid left me feeling more frustrated than happy. I could have easily forgiven Troy his mistake but his late wife was such a cardboard character and the reasons beyond "he was drunk" were never really provided. So I never really felt that the book delivered the character depth that I needed to get past the betrayal and see him as hero material. Especially considering the way he just up and married without giving Breanna any warning. And without that depth I was frustrated by the constant barrage of characters who were on to Breanna to just forgive as if she was somehow in the wrong. Ms. Hopper still can put together a compelling storyline, but Always a Bridesmaid just missed the mark for me.

I feel this is more like an interesting historical read -- and one that's superbly ...

I appreciate and admire this book for the writing. In this interesting work, you'll find well-formed English applied in clear, exceptional prose. It really reminds me of an era of writing (and editing) that is mostly lost today. It is, in fact, a five-star example of clear, correct writing.

Unfortunately, in my view, the investing approach Phelps espouses is completely untenable. It advocates techniques with profoundly low probability for success. The author is encouraging others to hunt for unicorns because, don't you see, unicorns exist: "Here's one (points to one stock). And here's another (points to another chart)." Many, many would-be investment paths are littered would would-be unicorns, and for every Buffet who has managed to wrangle a whole stable of them, there are literally millions of market participant --extremely smart, capable ones -- who hold the same goal but fail miserably. And that is the problem: flipping a coin a thousand times on one side is possible, but it's extremely improbable.

If I were rating this book on the validity of the ideas, it would be a one-star rating. However, I feel this is more like an interesting historical read -- one that's superbly written.

This book takes the perspective of the extremely long term investor focused on finding compounding machines in the public markets. It is geared towards the investor who spends the bulk of the investment time on the diligence process rather than trading and who is focused on buy and hold to an extreme (10+ years). The investor who benefits from this book is a rarity in today's hyper short term focused "investor" aka speculator. This book is worth its weight in gold if one can effectively implement the concepts described here. Although it is conceptually simple, the ideas in this book are more powerful than the other investment concepts in the market today.

How can a book be largely true, but not be a good book? By offering people a way to make a lot of money that is hard to do, but portraying it as easy. It can be done, and a tiny number succeed at it, but most of the rest lose money or don't make much in the process. This is such a book.

Let me illustrate my point with an example. Toward the end of every real estate bull market, books come out on how easy it is to make money flipping homes. The books must sell to some degree or the publishers wouldn't publish them. Few actually succeed at it because:

* It's a lot of work
* It's competitive
* It only works well when you have a bunch of people who are uneducated about the value of their homes and are willing to sell them to you cheap, and/or offer you cheap financing while you reposition it.
* Transaction costs are significant, and improvements don't always pay back what you put in.

You could make a lot of money at it, but it is unlikely. Now with this book, "100 to 1 in the Stock Market," the value proposition is a little different:

* Find one company that will experience stunning compound growth over 20-30+ years.
* Invest heavily in it, and don't diversify into a lot of other stocks, because that will dilute your returns.
* Hold onto it, and don't sell any ever, ever, ever! (Forget Lord Rothschild, who said the secret to his wealth was that he always sold too soon.)
* Learn to mention the company name idly in passing, and happily live off of the dividends, should there be any. ;)

Here are the problems. First, identifying the stock will be tough. Less than 1% of all stocks do that. Are you feeling lucky? How lucky? That lucky? Wow.

Second, most people will pick a dog of a stock, and lose a lot of money. If you aren't aware, more than half of all stocks lose money if held for a long time. Most of the rest perform meh. Even if you pick a stock you think has a lot of growth potential, there is often a lot of competition. Will this be the one to survive? Will some new technology obsolete this? Will financing be adequate to let the plan get to fruition without a lot of dilution of value to stockholders.

Third, most people can't buy and hold a single stock, even if it is doing really well. Most succumb to the temptation to take profits, especially when the company hits a rough patch, and all companies hit rough patches, non excepted.

Fourth, when you do tell friends about how smart you are, they will try to dissuade you from your position. So will the financial media, even me sometimes. As Cramer says, "the bear case always sounds more intelligent." Beyond that, never underestimate envy. :(

But suppose even after reading this, you still want to be a home run hitter, and will settle for nothing less. Is this the book for you? Yes. it will tell you what sorts of stocks appreciate by 100 times or more, even if finding them will still be rough.

This book was written in 1972, so it did not have the benefit of Charlie Munger's insights into the "Lollapalooza" effect. What does it take for a stock to compound so much?

* It needs a sustainable competitive advantage. The company has to have something critical that would be almost impossible for another firm to replicate or obsolete.
* It needs a very competent management team that is honest, and shareholder oriented, not self-oriented.
* They have to have a balance sheet capable of funding growth, and avoiding crashing in downturns, while rarely issuing additional shares.
* It has to earn a high return on capital deployed.
* It has to be able to reinvest earnings such that they earn a high return in the business over a long period of time.
* That means the opportunity has to be big, and can spread like wildfire.
* Finally, it implies that not a lot of cash flow needs to be used to maintain the investments that the company makes, leaving more money to invest in new assets.

You would need most if not all of these in order to compound capital 100 times. That's hard. Very hard.

Now if you want a lighter version of this, a reasonable alternative, look at some of the books that Peter Lynch wrote, where he looked to compound investments 10 times or more.
