About the Author

"August Strindberg" (1849-1912) was a Swedish writer and playwright and is credited and being one of the founders of modern theatre. His writings combined elements of psychology and naturalism. In 1884 Strindberg wrote a collection of short stories, Getting Married, that presented women in an egalitarian light and for which he was tried for and acquitted of blasphemy in Sweden.[94] Two groups "led by influential members of the upper classes, supported by the right-wing press" probably instigated the prosecution; at the time, most people in Stockholm thought that Queen Sophia was behind it. He is considered the "father" of modern Swedish literature and his The Red Room (1879) has frequently been described as the first modern Swedish novel.

interesting vignettes

I wasn't sure what this was, but it contains a series of vignettes around the theme of getting married - some who are happy, unfairness, gender equiviance, loneliness and more. The stories seem to be based mostly in upper Swedish society - reflecting on the unfairness of social classes, among other things. I enjoyed the writing style - it is quite classic and formal with a wide vocabulary.
