An Excellent Introduction

Romaine provides an excellent introduction to the field of bilingualism. Of the texts I have read on the topic, this is perhaps the one that finds the best balance between readability and comprehensiveness. She covers the main subfields of bilingualism, and discusses numerous studies in the field. If you're just getting into the field, this will serve as a great guide, and you'll be able to find some great resources which you'll then be able to pursue independently. I strongly recommend this as the first book to read on bilingualism. After you read this, then you can move on to more advanced texts.

Bought for a class, but enjoyed materials covered in book

I had to buy this for my FLA 499 Bilingualism and Languages in Contact class at ASU. There is a lot of material covered in the book by the author, but it's very informative and gives good references for further research on bilingualism/linguistics. Glad the professor picked this book--I still reference it for research/sources in my other linguistics classes.

I am recently retired and widowed and started planning to visit the Philippines in Fall, 2009. Like the first reviewer in this section I bought four books on the Philippines: a good guide book (Lonely Planet); Culture Shock, by A. But I am even more bullish on Elterman's book than Howp was...and I have now been in the Philippines for 6 weeks of a 12 week stay. I have three goals in being here. I want a warm place to winter every year, Jan to May; a good place for diving, snorkeling and sailing; and, hopefully to find a long term partner or wife. Any good guide book will get you around in the Philippines because the people are very friendly and helpful and most speak English. But Eltermans's book is indispensible. It contains practical information on almost every important aspect for someone with interests similar to mine. I am pretty tech savy but I found the section on cell phones and texting saved me time and frustration. And his explanation of the importance of texting and how to use it is helpful for anyone of any age wanting to meet and date Filipinas. Other sections on housing,transportation, getting an extended visa are also useful, going beyond a standard guidebook.

But the book's really strong suit is providing information on how to meet and date Filipina women. Elterman creates a typology of types of Filipina women who may be willing to date foreigners that has helped me manage a confusing situation. And he managed to do so while describing Filipino people in a positive and respectful manner which they certainly deserve. Any typology is just that, an abstraction and all real people are more complex than any description. But the guide provides rich and accurate description (in my limited experience) and subtle suggestions that are helpful to any foreigner who is seeking to date a Filipina or find a wife or companion regardless of age or how long they have been here. And Elterman does so in a fun and readable manner. I find myself consulting this unique book on a weekly basis.

This book is full of valuable advice, definitely worth the money!
Reading was enjoyable, I started it and didn't put it down until the end
I am married to a Filipina for 25 years in Australia, and have visited the Philippines many times
Still, I laerned a thing or two from the book!
The only negative aspect are frequent spelling mistakes (get a better proof reader, Larry!)

Imperfect but very good

Some information in this book is not 100% correct, but I think it is an excellent effort and a very useful book. The main error I recall is that the author says a fiancee visa gives you 6 months to get to know your prospective spouse... in reality the time period is 90 days and the U.S. government specifically says that it is NOT supposed to be an introductory period but rather the final checks and arrangements on somebody you are already committed to marrying. It is a bit hard to understand how the author missed the mark like that on something so very central to what this book is about.

Also I wonder if the author hasn't been doing some rationalizing or wishful thinking on the subject of how completely accepted the young Filipina/old American relationship is in the Philippines. I was just over there and saw the 19/55 combinations and I was told they are viewed with a mixture of pity and displeasure... and the topic of considerable gossip. Well, maybe the person telling me that had motives to do so... I don't know.

One thing the author didn't hit was the subject of tipping. I have 3 books on the Philippines so far and none clearly state what the normal custom is there. I mean I'm sure they are happy to take my money, but do Filipinos usually tip at restaurants, and how much?

Another thing the book should have covered is diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. All the travel books and the U.S. government recommend drugs to protect from malaria for tourists, but I'm sure the native people are not taking any such drugs. What is the consensus among expats living in the country? Surely the expense and side effects of the drugs make it nearly impossible for long-term residents to continue taking them. A little insight here would have been really nice.

But overall I liked the book. The author comes across as a fairly decent person, and the book seems packed with useful information and good advice. I felt it was like having a long chat with a very knowledgeable yet regular guy.

About the Author

James A. Morone (B.A., Middlebury College, and M.A. and PhD, University of Chicago) is Professor of Political Science at Brown University and five-time winner of the Hazeltine Citation for outstanding teacher of the year. A renowned scholar of American Political Science, Dr. Morone, an award-winning author, has published eight books including The Heart of Power (2009), Hellfire Nation (2003), and The Democratic Wish (1990). He served as President of the Politics and History Section of the American Political Science Association from 1999-2000 and the New England Political Science Association from 2002-03. He has been on the board of editors for eight scholarly journals and comments on politics in The New York Times, The London Review of Books, and The American Prospect.

Rogan Kersh (M.A. and PhD, Yale) is Provost and Professor of Political Science at Wake Forest University. A leading scholar in American Political Science, Dr. Kersh is best known for his work on health reform, obesity politics, and interest groups/lobbying. From 2006-12 he served as Associate Dean of the Wagner School of Public Service at New York University, where he built an undergraduate program, helped conceive and create NYU's new campus in Abu Dhabi, and was integral in the launch of a new Global Institute of Public Health. Dr. Kersh has published two books, more than fifty academic articles, and has provided commentary on U.S politics for dozens of different media outlets including CNN, Newsweek, and The New York Times. He was President of the American Political Science Association's organized section on Health Politics and Policy in 2011-12, and is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

Warning! Amazon's "" make no mention of the fact that this is the "Brief Second Edition," but in fact these ISBNs are indeed for the brief version. The only clue that as to which version this item is appears in the image of the cover, in tiny dark blue print.

This tome is not limited to just biofuels applications. I am especially interested in fermentation technologies and recovery technologies. Everyone seems to have a magic microbe for everything these days, but what is overlooked is how do you cost effectively separate out what you want from what you don't want considering these don't usually have industrial scale analogs that you can just port over from petrochemical applications. I am also glad that they cover inhibitors and other organisms.

About the Author
John G. Bartlett, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. He served as Chief of the Infectious Disease Division at the School for 26 years, stepping down in June of 2006. Dr. Bartlett received his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, and his medical degree at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, New York. He trained in internal medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, and the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and he completed his fellowship training in infectious diseases at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Bartlett has worked in several areas of research, all related to his specialty in infectious diseases. His major research interests have included anaerobic infections, pathogenic mechanisms of Bacteroides fragilis, anaerobic pulmonary infections, and Clostridium difficile-associated colitis. Dr. Bartlett is a member of the Institute of Medicine, a master of the American College of Physicians, past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and a recipient of the Kass Award from the IDSA. In 2005, Dr. Bartlett was awarded the Alexander Fleming Award by the IDSA and the Finland Award from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID). Dr. Bartlett has authored over 500 articles and reviews, more than 280 book chapters, and over 60 editions of 18 books. He has served on editorial boards for 19 medical journals. Dr. Auwaerter is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine serving as the Clinical Director for the Division of Infectious Diseases. He is a graduate of Columbia College and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Dr. Auwaerter completed his internal medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins and served as an Assistant Chief of Service. Following fellowship, Dr. Auwaerter joined the Johns Hopkins faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of General Internal Medicine practicing both infectious diseases and primary care. He earned a Masters of Business Administration through the Johns Hopkins School of Professional Studies. He serves as the Chief Medical Office of the Johns Hopkins Point of Care-Information Technology (POC-IT) Center responsible for producing the Johns Hopkins ABX (Antibiotic) and Johns Hopkins HIV Guides and he is the managing editor for the JH ABX Guide. Dr. Auwaerter's interests include Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus and respiratory tract infections.

Awesome resource

This is an awesome resource for anyone in the microbiology / infectious disease discipline. As a clinical microbiology manager, this resource is invaluable in determining the etiological agent with a disease process. If there is one book that you can buy that would include a listing of all pathogens and the infectious disease they cause, with the appropriate antimicrobial used to specifically treat the etiologic agent, then this book is the one.

I previously reviewed this book in December of 2005 when the first edition was available. You can find my initial review of the first edition on Amazon and on my web site. We are now in the third edition and this highly utilitarian book continues to amass and prove its value. The name ABX Guide is deceptive since we are all familiar with small booklets which describe a full range of anti-infectives with dosage recommendations and sensitivity details. In fact there are a very many such small publications. Here with the Johns Hopkins ABX Guide you are getting an entirely different animal. The first edition was 655 pages with a pull out chart. This third edition is 886 pages and the chart is gone. I liked the sensitivity chart with quick access recommendations. But I suppose we can't have everything. What we do still have is a book that can slip into a lab coat or other convenient carry method yet contains a wealth of easily and quickly accessible authoritative Infections Disease information. This is not a Drug Guide, it is much more. It is broken down into five basic categories as follows: Diagnosis, Pathogens, Management, Drugs and Vaccines. It further has three appendix covering Therapeutic Tables for Specific Diagnosis and Pathogens, General Therapeutic Tables and Drug to Drug Interaction Tables, plus an Index! I again remind you this will all fit in your lab coat. The information here is that which is well recognized, without significant controversy and widespread in its application. If you use this book as intended you will not be disappointed. What it is not and what it is unable to provide is a widespread, detailed, in depth discussion of infectious disease nor does it provide controversial or minority alternative views as to treatment recommendations. An example are the entries under Lyme Disease which follow the IDSA Guidelines from which I and others dissent. What is additionally very useful are the brief entries entitled "Basis of Recommendations" that are part of each monograph for further reading. This book has no shortage of honesty either. Under Lymphadenopathy "Basis of Recommendations", it clearly states "author opinion" and "No Guidelines available for diagnostic algorithm".
I appreciate such forthright clarity. This is not a substitute for Kucers/Crowe Use of Antibiotics which is a gem and treasure. Do not look for that here. But to have such diverse, reliable and authoritative pocket guide to Infectious Disease is quite an accomplishment. This pocket book is a service to all those in need of such information and should be in your pocket so it can be used to protect both your patient and yourself. And you don't even need a computer!
