About the Author
HAL BOX, FAIA, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, writes from fifty years’ experience in teaching and practicing architecture. His work includes schools, churches, office and commercial buildings, dormitories, and residences, as well as urban design projects. His sixteen years as Dean of the UT School of Architecture (1976–1992) led the school to become one of the top ten architecture schools in the United States. He and his wife life in Austin, Texas, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Thinking Inside the Box

As someone who has an interest in architecture but whose knowledge of architectural theory and history are superficial and spotty, I found Hal Box's book Think Like an Architect an especially rewarding read. Written with the confidence earned from a long, successful, and satisfying career, his book is a straightforward explanation of both the intention and process of producing the kind of buildings that are life-affirming and enduring. His writing is entirely free of the thornscrub argot that makes most architectural criticism an impenetrable thicket closed to "outsiders" and hostile to dialog. Thus unarmed, Mr. Box may therefore be vulnerable because he dares to use old-fashioned words like beauty, graceful, charming, and harmony. But to me, watching my local landscape erased and replaced by generic chain stores and anonymous neighborhoods, this language is as welcome as a summer thunderstorm falling on parched ground.

It was especially interesting to me to learn how a post-war generation of eager young architects were "brainwashed" by Modernism's cerebral rationality. This I can understand, as the enthusiasm followed their experiences of the Great Depression and World War II. Something new was certainly in order. But even newness can become stale and lifeless. Today, as a new generation of architects meets perhaps the even greater challenge of designing buildings that are "sustainable" or "green", we may be seeing another great age of inspired innovation, expanding the smaller scale vernacular experiments of Sam Mockbee, the elegant shelters of Glen Murcutt, and the social works of Cameron Sinclair's Architecture for Humanity Foundation, to influence and shape the mainstream market. I hope that architects, planners and consumers will avail themselves of the wisdom in Mr. Box's book as they participate in this great new adventure.

Think Like an Architect

I am not an architect; merely someone who appreciates the end results of good architecture. I do not routinely read books about architecture, or books written by architects. But as a long-time admirer of Hal Box's architectural work, I was curious how a book titled Think Like an Architect might read.

Short answer? Terrifically! I learned something interesting about the history, art and science of architecture in every chapter.

As I finished the book, which I accomplished faster than I would have liked or imagined, it occurred to me that Hal Box accomplished with this book what Vitruvius, the first century BC Roman architect, espoused as the goals of good architecture: commodity, firmness, and delight. The book accomplished its program of encouraging me to think more like an architect (commodity); the ideas and illustrations are thoughtfully and artfully presented in a sturdy format which will withstand years of referencing and re-reading (firmness); and Professor Box puts forth his ideas and opinions, earned over a long and distinguished career as an educator and practicing architect, clearly and entertainingly (delight).

Whether one plans to build or is simply curious about how to do it right, Think Like an Architect is a must.

An informative, useful book and the way the future is headed

It's getting harder and harder to find a decent job in America. More than half of all Americans are living on a very low income, and more and more are living on poverty wages. It seems like now, more than ever, is the best time to consider becoming an entrepreneur and going into business for yourself. You just can't rely on the job market anymore.

This book is great because it goes into detail about why some people are more successful than others. It explains a lot of the psychological research that will determine why some people will become rich, and others will fail. It also has a lot of useful ideas about how to determine what type of products the market demands and the proper timing of when to to sell those products.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who simply wants to improve their life and finally start making the money they deserve.

This book reads like a manifesto on effective internet product strategy. I really liked that. A few excellent points about product vision product positioning. Timing and competitive strategy were particularly well covered. I really liked the balance of new insights with coverage of the more well-known academic models. It felt really well thought through and comprehensive. I don't think I've ever read another book that did such a good job of tying it all together. Thumbs up from me!

Great read for anyone looking to start their own buisiness

Very nice book. The reading in chapter 6 was a little dense (business models) but I think the point is solid - there are only 7 basic types of business models; everything is just an elaboration or combination of those basic ideas. I like that. I'm a little OCD about the details of my business model, so it was nice to see if distilled down to such a simple concept.

Focused on Character Not Behavior

Not since Parenting is HEART Work has there been another parenting book that I really liked. Most parenting books annoy me. Why? Because I find them gimmicky or filled with tricks and cliche's that don't treat children as unique creations of God wired by Him for a purpose. I'm passionate about this because as a boy I was one of those boys that drove my teachers crazy - I wasn't rebellious, disrespectful, mean or insubordinate - but they might have called me a "bad boy" when I was out of ear shot. Because I didn't come out of a cookie cutter. But if they could see me now, they'd understand, I'm a leader, a visionary, a creative innovator, inventor and initiator. An entrepreneur. A mover-and-shaker. I still can't sit still.

That is why I was hesitant when I was offered a free copy of Spiritual Parenting to review, because it was a new "parenting" book, and I hate parenting books! Parenting books teach parents how to get their kids to behave, and if you've been to any of my discipline workshops, you've heard me say,

"I have absolutely NO interest in children behaving."

After the shocked faces recover, I assure them, behavior will improve, but what I'm interested in is shaping their character and their hearts. If you change their behavior - you succeed in making little Pharisees out of them. Training them how to "act" when adults are around. And what happens when the adults are no longer around. Uh, huh. Exactly!

An Excellent Resource for Parents

Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony stands out amongst the crowd of Christian books by grounding parenting in discipleship. Instead of focusing parental energy on sin management, Anthony urges parents to share their lives transformed by the gospel. "The goal of spiritual parenting is that our children would learn to hear and know God's voice, desire to obey it, and obey it in the power of God's Spirit, not their own strength."

With a goal of passing down a vibrant faith, Anthony describes environments and values that we should consciously cultivate in parenting: storytelling, identity, faith community, service, out of the comfort zone, responsibility, course correction, love and respect, knowing, and modeling. I found each chapter encouraging. Though Anthony is not coming from a covenantal perspective, I found her ideas and examples compelling and easy to comport to a reformed theology of children.

As twenty-first century evangelicals reconsider how to do church, the way we raise children in the faith must be part of that conversation. Anthony's book is a good start for parents to consider some of the fundamental concerns of raising children who share an authentic and transformational faith. It also serves as a necessary reminder that parents are responsible for the spiritual formation of their children, and how they live is much more important to that development than anything that happens for an hour or two a week.

It is a temptation for parents to look for someone to tell them just what to do, and this book is not structured to feed that. Anthony encourages parents to know their children, embrace the way God made them, and parent them as individuals. Without a formula to follow, parents are better reminded of their eternal focus. "What is our job then? The joy of parenting can be spent on cultivating environments for our children's faith to grow, teaching them how to cultivate a love relationship with Jesus as we cultivate our own, living our lives authentically in front of them so that they become eyewitnesses to our own transformation. Best Parenting Advice Ever

Read this book. If Christ is the center of my life, He will be in my kids' lives too, right? This book helped me to realize that is my TRUE role as a parent. Then it showed me some awesome ways to prepare them to know their God who loves them. The satisfactory behavior is just a side effect! :)

Aris Spanos is Wilson Schmidt Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech. He has also taught at Birkbeck College, London, the University of Cambridge, the University of California and the University of Cyprus. Professor Spanos is the author of Probability Theory and Statistical Inference (1999) and Statistical Foundations of Econometric Modeling (1986), both published by Cambridge University Press. Professor Spanos's research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, Econometric Reviews, and Philosophy of Science. His research interests include the philosophy and methodology of statistical inference and modeling, foundational problems in statistics, statistical adequacy, misspecification testing and respecification, resampling and simulation techniques and modeling speculative prices.

the best foundation in stats imaginable

This book is absolutely remarkable.
It presents the material traditionally taught in the second-year statistics (but actually goes well beyond, e.g. stochastic processes) and will be of interest to all people interested to (re-)learn statistics well, either undergraduates, or advanced students of any level. Professors should also read it maybe use it in class. Students will thank them.
The author took more than 14 years to polish it, and I would bet that scholars of pedagogy will put this book as an example of the highest possible level of their discipline. I would also bet that this book will have a long and brilliant career in statistical education. On gets the feeling that the author gave the same care and energy to the elaboration of this book as people commonly give to research.
The author is also a man with a mission. In his preface, one can read with pleasure and disbelief a passionate attack on the dumbing-down of undergraduate education in Europe and America. Having taught undergrads in commerce with the "predigested pap" he is talking about, I can really relate to the frustration of the author. There is no dilution of material or dumbing down here: all the ugly details are given, which makes that book not only a pedagogical tool but also a great reference.
There is no book on the market that is so polished in both presentation and discussion, that exposes intermediate stats at such an intelligent, comprehensive level, and finally that uses the historical development to project such clarity on the actual state of the science. I would say the closest competitor to this book is the great volume "Intermediate Statistics" by Dale Poirier, which has more econometrics and which might be a bit more comprehensive on the bayesian side, but the main focus of this one is on UNDERSTANDING and SYNTHESIZING. By the way, the focus of this book is statistics, not econometrics, despite the fact that the author has written extensively in econometrics.
I wish I would be an undergrad again and re-learn statistics with this book. Nevertheless, readers of all levels will learn something from it.
Ah, and the price is right. Value for your money!

Spanos -- bigger, better

Like many, I used the 1986 big green Spanos book to learn econometrics. Simply put, this latest follows the course charted by the first book -- it first covers probability theory, and then uses this to motivate the modelling portion of the book. Unlike the 1986 book, which was terse in places, this monograph is much more comprehensive. It isn't so much that new subjects are covered (though some are), but the current treatment far surpasses the 1986 book. More graphs, to aid geometric intution, are included. More text discusses the implications of the mathematics. More useful, in short, for a graduate student trying to learn econometrics. The only book I think is in this class is DeGroot, and that book suffers from little attention paid to econometrics (though it does do the probability material quite well).
Highly, highly recommended. And one other bonus: Spanos discusses in the introduction why he refuses to water things down, and even has a quote from the mathemetician Binmore.

the book is great for anybody who wants to know the foundations of statistical and probability modelling. it covers all aspects of modelling like defining a statistical space, probability model, estimation, inference and its chapters on stochastic process were very informative. It was a great learning experience through this book. Basically it explains why we do it and how we do it

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Joel F. Houston is the John B. Hall Professor of Finance at the University of Florida. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College. Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Houston was an Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Joel's research is primarily in the areas of corporate finance and financial institutions, and his work has been published in a number of top journals including THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Professor Houston also currently serves as an Associate Editor for the JOURNAL OF MONEY, CREDIT AND BANKING, the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL SERVICES RESEARCH and the JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL ECONOMIC POLICY. Since arriving at the University of Florida in 1987, Joel has received 19 teaching awards, and has been actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate education. In addition to co-authoring leading textbooks in financial management, Dr. Houston has participated in management education programs for the PURC/World Bank Program, Southern Company, Exelon Corporation and Volume Services America. Joel enjoys playing golf and tennis and spending time with his wife (Sherry) and two children (Chris and Meredith). Not for Novice Learners

This book was a required text for a financial management class in which the class was geared as an introductory course to finance. I found this book extremely difficult to understand as a beginner in this subject area-- the language and vocabulary used was written with the assumption that the reader has a background in finance. Many financial terms were undefined or would be explained only in the fine print of the text. I found myself constantly looking online to define words or better explain concepts because the text did a poor job. Also, went referencing figures and tables in the text, the author would analyze a table and explain it but the table would be on the next page so it made no logical sense... how can I possibly read about and reference the table at the same time? The authors of this book obviously have been around this information far too long and can no longer communicate at an introductory level.

Decent Textbook

Fundamentals of Financial Management is geared toward courses for people either forming the base for further study in finance or for courses in finance for non-financial managers (which applies to me). If you are going to be in any type of upper management, especially a CEO or executive vice president, you'll need to have a basis for how financials work (as well as if you are in business for yourself).

I am finishing up a course in my PhD program that uses this as the assigned textbook. For the most part, explanations are thorough and I really appreciate the samples of excel calculations as well as financial calculator use. Though it is a textbook, for the most part, it's not that difficult to read.

My only complaint is that some of the explanations of certain concepts receive little attention in the chapter, but a detailed question is asked in the problems at the end of the chapter based on that concept. There were a couple of times that I had to look to external sources to figure something out from the book. Now, that isn't necessarily outlandish for doctoral courses but someone working on a bachelor's degree or a master's degree shouldn't have to do that.

Overall, it's a good textbook for the basics of the financial industry. If I was to teach an introductory financial course (not bloody likely, that's not my strong suit), I would consider using this book.

Not all you need in order to do well

This book provides the finance concepts you will experience in a graduate MBA program. It is relatively easy to understand, but it is best used in a class where you also have a teacher lecturing. It only provides half of the answers in the back of the book, and does not explain how it calculated those answers. It can be difficult for someone who has never taken a finance course before.

Spelling for adult learner

I am using this book to tutor a Russian immigrant whose spoken English is excellent, but who has no concept of English spelling. The book is very easy to use, progresses logically from one lesson to the next and is well suited to using with older children or adults. It teaches the basic spelling rules, but uses higher level vocabulary and is not childish. It offers clear explanations and a variety of practice exercises. Highly recommended

Great spelling program

I purchased this book to help my fourth grader, who is in a reading/writing curriculum that is good at reading but omits spelling pretty much altogether (NYC teachers are NOT ALLOWED to give spelling tests). So far the book is very logical and helpful, teaching students to analyze words syllable by syllable and apply the standard English rules and generalizations. Its goal isn't to teach 100% of English words, but the 85% that follow "regular" English rules. The extensive intro and diagnostic section is also very helpful for us non-educators using the book. I highly recommend it.

Plan on using it for my 3rd and 4th grade spelling.

I have spent my summer reviewing this book and aligning it with the 3rd and 4th grade curriculum I use. I will be using it this school year and think the students will learn much more than memorizing spelling for one week using this curriculum. I am excited and will follow up my review when we get into the school year.

Update.. Almost through the year and I love this book. Even my below grade level spellers and resource kids still do the lessons. I am seeing retention of the spelling rules, more word knowledge and students able to justify how and why to spell words. I plan on using this next year and recommending it to be used with upper grade resource kids at my school.
