After looking in all the stalls, she and her mother find the perfect gift--a carved walking stick, so Abuelita can accompany them to the market the next time they go. This simple story is a vehicle for introducing Spanish words and showing a marketplace in Peru that the author once visited. Although the pleasant, color-saturated illustrations incorporate textile patterns and clothing reflecting the culture, the market scenes lack the bustle and vibrancy of Ted Lewin's pictures in Market (1996). Back matter includes a map, information on the market, and translations of 10 Spanish words used in the text. The book will be good supplemental material for elementary-level social studies. Use it with Lewin's book and with Leyla Torres' Saturday Sancocho (1995), another South American market story. Julie Cummins

Katacha Diaz graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in sociology and an MA in public administration. A former research associate of the University of California at Davis, Katacha retired from academia to pursue her passion for research, writing and photography. Among the books she has authored are In the Midnight Sky, Fiesta!, The Girl Who Loves Tamales, Riding with the Wind! and Carolina's Gift for the Soundprints' Make Friends around the World series. Katacha lives in Davis, California.

Reminder of my trip to Peru

I loved this book, especially since I had just been to Peru. The illustrations reminded me of all I had seen, including a floor full of guinea pigs, wonderful weavers and the things they made. And the story is so sweet.

This book so simply in words and pictures describes what we experienced in Peru. Our grandchildren love it. Just wish I had purchased the hard-copy edition so it will last forever!

My Kindergarten class is studying countries around the world. In addition to pictures, I wanted to find a story from a child's perspective. This is the story of a little girl who goes in search of a gift for her Grandmother. It was the perfect glimpse my students needed into Peruvian life.
