About the Author
David Crow was a designer and art director before moving into academia. Today he is the head of the School of Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. His freelance clients included Rolling Stones Records, Virgin Records, Phonogram, and The Royal Shakespeare Company. He lives in Manchester, UK.

Semiotics at Play

Feels weighty, but it's a light read. It does a good job of making semiotics accessible for students of visual communication- which is why I bought it, but somehow it depoliticises this very powerful methodology. The main authors are there, but the significant implications for the development of semiotics in universities somehow gets replaced by a myriad of squiggly stuff which doesn't add much to the argument, but certainly fills up the pages with doodles galore. Perhaps that's a little harsh as theres lots to enjoy in the way that the theoreticians are introduced, and if the students follow up with with other readings, then David Crow will have performed a useful task. To summarise; plenty of semiotics at play, but not much ideology at work.

Good overview of semiology

Good book written in a very english style. Somewhat hard to understand until you read it for the fourth time. This has all the information you need to understand the signs and their classifications.
