I Want A Refund

I didn't want to rate this book with even one star. To the author and her sycophants who assume that the "bad" reviews are other authors with an axe to grind, I beg to differ with you. I have never written a book nor do I have anything to gain with this review. I read the reviews of this book on Amazon and decided to order it notwithstanding the few "bad" reviews. I should have paid closer attention to the "bad" reviews. The writing was stilted and choppy and I stopped reading several times because of it. Since I paid for it, I decided to continue reading. It's obvious that the writer does not know or understand good literature or the times (19th century England) in which the events occurred. Both the book and the miniseries were tastefully done but the same cannot be said of this book. Maggie?? Really. Thornton calling Margaret Hale "Maggie" was laughable. The author also changed the characters of Thornton and Margaret so much that one could hardly recognize them. But what was most insulting and totally out of character was the back story about the Thorntons. At that point, I stopped reading and refused to continue. If the author of this travesty wanted a story with murder, mayhem and abuse, she should have written her own story, not attempt a "continuation" of good literature. My advice to anyone thinking about purchasing this book (especially those who enjoyed Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South and/or the miniseries) DON'T DO IT.

I am disappointed with this book. I found Mrs. Thornton's evil character very distasteful! Killing her husband, abuse, drinker and gambler? Not believable. Using the endearment name of Maggie instead of Margaret also annoyed me....I don't think nicknames were that common. The violence and constant drama was too much of a distraction and I wanted a continuation of the love story.
Also, way too much to spend for an ebook.

Too much love, too little happening

I have to say that I liked the beginning giving the reader a short introduction about what happened before. The book started to become less interesting though when all this love-talk didn't seem to end. It doesn't fit either of the characters as we know them because in the end we have a lovable fool idolizing his wife and a stubborn girl always getting what she wants. Of course we all love Miss Hale's and Mrs Thornton's slowly evolving love story in the original and want it to continue but the original book, and even the mini series this book originates from, is mainly about the industrial development and the effects it had on the people portraying a part of Britains history - of course with a beautiful love story attached to it.
A sequel which focuses only on the romantic part can't live up to the original. By the way it would have been more romantic if the story had been less plainly laid out.
I also think that the author got some things wrong. In my opinion Mr. Bell is definately dead, not only in the book but also at the end of the mini series and shouldn't reappear. Secondly, the character of Mrs. Thornton is not plausible. I agree that she is definately not the perfect mother-in-law. She obviously doesn't like Margaret very much but she worships her son and always tries to do the right thing according to convention. This becomes clear when she starts changing the initials on her linen, when she agrees that John has to propose to Margaret and when she tries to give advice when Margaret is seen at the station even though Mrs Hale is dead and wouldn't have known if she had kept her promise. She would never act as she does in this book.
The last thing which distracted my reading were the very frequent mistakes concerning grammar and spelling. I am not a native to the English language and even I stumbled across various mistakes. I'm of the opinion that it is essential to have someone check the language before publishing a script even if it is a so-called fan fiction.
Maybe it would be advisable to dream less of Richard Armitage and think more about the development of the characters and a meaningful story while writing a sequel........
