Bittersweet ending to an amazing career

The first two-thirds of "The Salmon of Doubt", as assembled by Douglas Adams' editor, consists of essays, lectures, magazine articles, and other short pieces written by Adams. It is an interesting glimpse into his mind, his work habits, his love of computers and gadgets, and his views on religion, atheism, and evolution. As an added bonus, the last third of the book contains the first eleven chapters of what was meant to be Adams' new Dirk Gently novel (although he tantalizingly hinted in interviews that he might turn it into a sixth "Hitchhiker's" book), also named "The Salmon of Doubt."

The essay/article portion of the book, while interesting, does have an unavoidably hodgepodge feel to it. Most of this material will be familiar to diehard Douglas Adams fans (in fact, much of it has already been printed elsewhere - little here is new material), but it is nice to have it all gathered together in one place. Unfortunately, no index or table of contents is provided, so finding a particular piece is rather challenging.

The portion of the book actually devoted to "The Salmon of Doubt" is very intriguing. As the editor notes, the eleven chapters are stitched together from three separate "versions" of the novel that Adams was working on at the time of his death. As a result, some of the chapter transitions are very choppy (and of course the story sputters out without a proper ending, although this does seem vaguely appropriate for a Dirk Gently novel). However, I found chapters two through seven of the book to be very engaging; a bit rough, certainly, but this was shaping up to be a great Dirk Gently novel. It was with sadness that I reached the end of this story and realized that there would be no ending, and further, no other novels from Douglas Adams.

I don't fault the editor for assembling the story the way he's chosen to, as an amalgam of three different manuscripts - I'm sure this would have been his suggestion even if Adams were still alive. Still, I would love to see a completely "unedited" version of the novel, i.e., one that includes all three working versions; I think that would be fascinating to read. It's certainly a tease to know that certain parts of the different versions were skipped over in assembling this edition.

Having said that, I still do think this book is a must-own if you're a fan of Douglas Adams and his work, due to the inclusion of the unfinished novel. However, when reading "The Salmon of Doubt", you must be prepared to read an unpolished, unfinished story; if you're able to read it in this frame of mind, it's actually very rewarding.

Heartbreakingly interrupted.

He made hitchhiking a universal thing.

Literally.
Douglas Adams, author of the five books in the vastly popular comic-space saga "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy (you did indeed read that correctly), plus an assortment of other novels, died in May 2001.
Now comes a posthumous collection of his writings, called "The Salmon of Doubt," which allows his fans one last, gentle look at a revolutionary voice in literature and science-fiction.
"Salmon" is very much a toast to Adams, a eulogy to him.
The assembled writings are fabulous, culled from a massive selection of writings, letters, essays, various introductions and other things from Adams' computer.
The title refers to an included unfinished Dirk Gently book which, had he lived, might have turned into the sixth "Hitchhiker" book.
Other points of interest:
The first published work of twelve-year-old Douglas Adams, a letter to the editor to "The Eagle," a popular boys' magazine.
"Y," in which Adams helpfully points out that the question "Why?" is the only one important enough to have had a letter named after it.
"Riding the Rays," in which Adams gets the idea to compare riding a new technological submarine, the "Sub Bug," to riding manta rays off the coast of Manta Ray Bay near Australia, the rejection of his proposal when it comes to riding the rays and, upon discovering a manta in said bay, his ease with giving up the pursuit of a ride. Quite possibly the best entry in the whole book.
"Is There an Artificial God?" is an interesting speech from Adams on his aetheism, as he breaks downb his non-belief into steps and explores the contrasts between science and religion.
"Cookies," in which Adams finds himself plagued by the most horrid of human entities: The cookie thief. Or does he?
A letter to Disney's unresponsive David Vogel leaving a chart of numbers at which Adams can possibly be reached.
"The Private Life of Genghis Khan": A woman whose village has just been pillaged and burnt to the ground by the Mongol now finds herself right next to him, with one of his warriors forcing her to ask the mighty Khan how his day was...
It is almost spooky how, in a review/essay of P.G. Wodehouse's unfinished novel "Sunset at Blandings," Adams laments the fact that Wodehouse's final work is "unfinished not just in the sense that it suddenly, heartbreakingly for those of us who love this man and his work, stops in midflow, but in the more important sense that the text up to that point is also unfinished."
Heartbreakingly stopped in midflow, unfinished? The same can be said of Adams himself.

Farewell, Douglas

The world was robbed of one it's greatest and funniest writers on May 11, 2001, when Douglas Adams, author of the hugely popular "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" and "Dirk Gently" books, died from a heart attack at the age of 49. As a writer, Adams was a true original. His style of humor was gloriously funny, and he certainly had a most unique way with words. His final book, the posthumous release "The Salmon Of Doubt," is a collection of assorted writings, including essays, e-mails, interviews, lectures and letters that Adams had given or written over the years, as well as an unfinished third "Dirk Gently" novel that Adams had been sporadically working on for many years. Much of the material was culled from the disk drives of Adams' collection of Macintosh computers, and we, Adams' faithful readers, can certainly be grateful for these golden DNA nuggets. The book contains such gems as Adams discussing his childhood, his nose, his friendship with dogs Maggie and Trudie, his great introduction to Procol Harum (a favorite band of Adams AND myself) just before they take the stage, his advice about how to make a cup of really good tea, his attempts to get "Hitchhiker's" made as a feature film (which *finally* happened in 2005), and his lecture about the existence of an artificial God. There's also a hilarious sketch about Genghis Khan, a short "Hitchhiker's" story involving Zaphod Beeblebrox, and, finally, 11 chapters of the unfinished Dirk Gently novel, entitled "The Salmon Of Doubt," which, although it is quite obviously an unpolished work-in-progress, is still very funny (though I'm saddened that we'll never know what happens to Dirk after Chapter 11, which is a terrible shame). Douglas Adams had so much more left to give to this world, he had so much more left to write. But we can take comfort in the great, hysterically funny gifts he did leave us---"Hitchhiker's" (not only the books but also the radio & TV series, and the feature film), "Dirk Gently," the travelogue book "Last Chance To See" (which succeeds as a serious piece sprinkled with great humor throughout), and his writing for the "Doctor Who" TV series. Douglas, as a longtime fan of yours, I just want to thank you for all the good cheer you've given me over the years. I will treasure your work & your memory 'til the end of my days, and perhaps even after that. "The Salmon Of Doubt" is a very fond farewell to the late, great Douglas Noel Adams.

Finally -- a clear explanation of tensors

I was first exposed to tensors in college, and the experience was so unpleasant and bewildering that I switched to quantum mechanics. QM made sense to me; tensors did not.

Decades later, I had a real need for tensors in my job, so I had to learn them. I bought and read a half-dozen well-rated books from Amazon, but only this book worked. The exposition is mathematically rigorous, but the content is also well-motivated. Their explanation of "The Tensor Concept" is the subject of a dedicated chapter; it alone is worth the price of the book. Its presentation encapsulates the book's style, so I'll preview it here.

A standard, one-dimensional vector is a ray in space, with direction and length independent of the coordinate system. As the coordinate system changes (e.g. rotate and/or stretch the axes), the coordinate values change, but the vector is the same. (Indeed, that's how you figure out the new coordinate values!)

The most simple example of mapping one vector into another is multiplication by a two dimensional matrix. Here is the golden insight: if the input and output vectors are coordinate independent, then there must be some kind of coordinate-independent function that defines the mapping, and it is called a tensor. In short, a mixed rank-2 tensor is the coordinate independent version of a matrix.

They work through the transformation rules of a standard vector to establish notation, then work through the exact corresponding process to get the transformation rules for the matrix. Instead of just asserting that "A Tensor is something which transforms the following way", they start with the intuitive notion and present a simple derivation of the transformation rule. For example, they state up front that the reason why the tensor transforms is that there is a change in basis vectors. Some descriptions never mention what is causing the tensor to 'transform' -- they just assume you already know. An excellent precept of math education is "Never memorize, always re-derive" (because memorizing what you don't understand may get you through the next test, but it deprives one of the foundation necessary to get through the test after next). The presentation in this book follows that precept beautifully (e.g. starting at transformation of bases and deriving the transformation laws). The Soviets were famous for their mathematical education, and this book reflects the excellence of that educational approach.

Similarly, the dot product of two vectors defines a scalar. If the scalar is coordinate independent, then there must be a coordinate independent function from vectors to numbers. It is a different kind of rank-1 tensor. When they do the same basic derivation, the distinction between covariant and contravariant indicies becomes crystal clear. If the components of the vector are a "contravariant" tensor, then this "different kind" is a "covariant" tensor. They also explain the relationship between reciprocal basis systems, and illustrate in clear pictures why whatever is "covariant" in one system is "contravariant" in the other, and vice versa. So they finally made clear what was so confusing about "covariant" and "contravariant": there is no fundamental distinction, and it just depends on which arbitrary choice of coordinate system one makes.

That's the first 100 pages. The next 150 present the "applications" portion. Once the basic concept is clear, the rest is fairly straightforward algebra. Again, it is quite well presented, but the main value to me was the conceptual foundation.

A clear development of vector and tensor concepts.

I have a solid foundation in vector analysis, but never felt comfortable with tensors and generalized coordinates, yet these are necessary for much of modern physics. This book was an ideal fit for my background. It presented a clear and steady development of both tensor and vector concepts with illustrations and examples. Covariant and contravariant components, metrics, and generalized coordinates were developed alongside of orthogonal basis concepts. Then, after the first half of the book developed the tools, the second half of the book presented analysis covering such topics as Stokes and Gauss' theorem, finishing with the fundamental theorem of vector analysis. My only complaint is that the book ended where it did. A section on more advanced tensor concepts would have fit in nicely.

Dated, but well-written and complete

This book is a translation from the Russian of a regarded text written in the 1960's. Taking this into account you cannot expect to find a state-of-the-art exposition of the subject. However, the book is written in a very concise and focused style, making it endurable. Its clear introduction to many delicate topics (covariant derivatives, metric tensors, geodesics, etc.) is still valuable even now when the differential form approach seems to have won the battle. Also, the sections it devotes to integral theorems look more in touch with current trends in mathematics than most of the classical texts at this level.

In addition, he is a member of the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section. Excellent resource

As an attorney and the wife of a physician, I can attest that "the Final Hurdle," is a wonderful resource for both attorneys and physicians alike. It goes into great detail to explain the major issues that's often arise in physical employment contracts while comprehensively explaining all the legal caveats in a way that physicians will be able to understand. Furthermore, it serves as a practical and informative guide to physicians who are just beginning to embark on their employment search. Not only does this book explain legal concepts it also accurately discusses various practice models, the pros and cons of different compensation options and many other issues involving the practice of medicine. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any physician, attorney or any other medical professional as it is an excellent and accurate resource.

Unfortunately, bought this book because am a fan of The White Coat Investor, and he had a good review on this, especially for the practice valuation portion. Book was fine, and no disrespect to the lawyer who write this, but it definitely was not worth 70+ dollars. Wish I had known that before buying. There are plenty of excellent articles on practice valuation that you can find by Googling... hope this review helps other folks who are in the same boat.

Excelente y bien documentado.

Desde hacía bastante tiempo deseaba leer un buen libro acerca de Los Templarios, una curiosidad que empezó desde pequeño y fue creciendo al leer Ivanhoe de Sir Walter Scott y ver la serie de televisión protagonizada por Roger Moore. Lo único que llegaba a mis manos eran relatos fantásticos. Este libro está bien documentado y sigue la historia de la orden desde sus inicios hasta el final, se puede decir que su final es la célebre maldición del gran maestre Templario lanzada al Papa Clemente V y a Felipe rey de Francia. A un tiempo y asociado a la orden de los Templarios se sigue la historia de las cruzadas. Muy interesante, nada fantástico en el sentido de que no hay relatos de tesoros perdidos, ni poderes místicos.

This book helped my four-year old.

My 4-year-old son is very bright and imaginative, but has a hard time focusing on tasks -- as a result, his small-motor skills were beginning to lag behind. This workbook helped him develop skills in drawing shapes, solving puzzles, and beginning to write letters.
The workbook has bright pictures and a variety of actitivies. Parents (or kids) can choose to skip around the book if the child gets tired of one kind of activity. We chose to work straight through, stopping whenever he got tired or frustrated. The activities are challenging but not impossible.
One caveat -- are preschoolers really expected to know how to write the alphabet in upper and lower case? They learn how in this book, but I seem to remember taking that up in the first grade, oh a million or so years ago.

fun, but frustrating

My son was almost 4 when we got this a couple of months ago, and he really likes it (still does), but it's a bit frustrating in the following way: many of the pictures that it uses for learning letters (e.g. "circle the picture that begins with u") are of vocabulary items that 4 year olds don't necessarily know. E.g. for "u" they had a batter and someone who I guessed was an umpire. But my 4-year-old doesn't know what an umpire is, even though he's cognitively just at the right level for this book in the sense that he finds it fun to do, and when he knows what the pictures are he can pick the right one. Another page had a frilly heart as one of the choices for "v", and you were supposed to know that the heart was a valentine. My kid has a pretty big vocabulary for a 4-year-old, and knows the word valentine, but it just was a little abstract for him. The result is that I have to help him a lot, and I think it'd be more fun for him if he felt he could do it himself. If anyone knows of a similar book with more age-appropriate vocabulary pictures, it'd be great if they could post that in a review, since he does really seem to enjoy the activities in the book, and views getting to do the book as a treat.

Highly Recommend for Pre-K

My son just turned three in August, but he has already completed this book. We did a few pages everyday - I think we spent a couple of months on it. He is now able to write upper and lowercase letters, and can do simple math concepts, such as greater vs. lesser, which group has more...there are mazes, coloring activities, and a variety of lessons to teach shapes, sizes, counting, writing, etc.

What I liked best about this book is the different phrases that they use in the instructions. My son learned the relationship between phrases "which ones match" and "where does it belong", "which one is different" and "which one is not the same"...just to name a couple. My son immediately applied what he learned from the book to his everyday activities, so I know that he did absorb some, if not all, the lessons.

Since this book is a combination of smaller books from School Zone, it's not necessary to buy the others unless your child has trouble with a particular area. My son struggled with the pages dealing with "beginning sounds," so I bought him the book that is just activities to teach beginning sounds.

I prefer School Zone to all other preschool workbook series, with the exception of Kumon.

A forensic scientist, Cydney Mickens earned her bachelor of science degree in forensic science from Albany State University before graduating from the University of Florida with a master’s degree in forensic toxicology.

While she enjoys her scientific career, Mickens also loves to write and understands the ability of effective communication to influence relationships. Her goal is to help a community of families build a strong foundation of love, honesty, and communication.

When not in the laboratory, Mickens works with her company, A Better We, LLC. A dedicated wife and mother, Mickens enjoys spending time with family and friends in Metro Atlanta.
