About the Author
Robert J. Michaels is a Professor of Economics at California State University, Fullerton, and Daniel Haan Research Fellow in Law and Economics. He is also an independent consultant to the electricity and natural gas industries. He holds an A.B. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D from the University of California, Los Angeles, both in economics. His past positions include Staff Economist at the Institute for Defense Analyses and Senior Advisor to Hagler Bailly Consulting (now PA Consulting). He is an Adjunct Scholar at the Texas Public Policy Foundaton, the Cato Institute, the Institute for Energy Research and the National Center for Policy Analysis. His research on electricity and gas restructuring, measuring and constraining market power, vertical integration, and renewable energy requirements has appeared in industry and scholarly journals including Public Utilities Fortnightly, The Electricity Journal, Regulation, Antitrust Bulletin, Review of Industrial Organization, and Energy Law Journal. He is also Co-Editor of Contemporary Economic Policy, a peer-reviewed journal of the Western Economic Association. He has advised state commissions, electric utilities, power marketers, natural gas producers, pipelines, public interest groups, and governments on regulatory and antitrust matters. He has testified before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission, the Illinois Commerce Commission, and the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

this is a real review

I had the honor of taking the author for intermediate micro economics at csuf. I read every single word of this book. This professor uses examples that are intended to be different. These examples are somewhat extreme..which is exactly what illustrates each economic point. Choose this textbook. Real students will get connected in each example..and the other guy said it perfectly; The examples will be discussed at parties.

Don't buy the book. This is the worst book I ever read at the undergraduate level because the author made every easy concepts so hard to understand. If this book is required at your school, look at the topic and learn it at youtube would be 1000x more efficient. This book cost $170 when I first bought it. Amazing.

A classic of Slavic vampire literature from 19th century Serbian author Milovan Glisic, “After Ninety Years“ tells the tale of Sava Savanovic, who haunted the watermill in the village of Zarozje. Because Glisic wrote 17 years before Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” introduced bats and Transylvania to the vampire trope, he based his story on the folktales and folk beliefs of villagers in the mountains of western Serbia along the Drina River valley. As such, it represents a treasure trove of ethnographic information and offers insights into authentic vampire lore before the creation of the modern pop culture vampire. The language Glisic employs is the vernacular of the uneducated and illiterate rural population in the mountainous regions of western Serbia along the Drina River valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. In contrast to the heavily ornamented and wordy prose so common among his 19th century contemporaries in Russia and the west, Glisic deliberately wrote in a sparse, plain, and raw style, accurately reflecting the mannerisms of village life and culture, an approach used by Mark Twain in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. Similar to 19th century American author Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle, Glisic mined local folklore to retell the story of the vampire Sava Savanovic. As such, the text presents a wealth of ethnographic material. Glisic offers valuable insights into the roles of women and children in the traditional patriarchal Serbian zadruga, a family-based agricultural cooperative that formed the basis of village life. The role of alcohol in hospitality, causing and settling disputes is also quite evident. And village gossip plays an important role in the everyday life of both men and women. Of particular note is Glisic’s description of the folk beliefs surrounding vampires, how they are found, how they are killed, the forms they take, their physical appearance, etc. In this, Glisic accurately reflects folk beliefs still present today in many rural areas of the Balkans.

Strahinja (Strakh-in-ya) and Radojka (Radojka) were in love ... a love that was forbidden by her father Zivan (Zhi-van). This almost sounds like the opening for many vampire stories that have been written over the years.

This story, however, was written in 1880 and although we see the young couple live happily ever after, it is the course of events which, as you will read, leads to the discovery of the vampire, Sava Savanovic (Sah-vah Sah-vam-o-vich) by Strahinja. The young suitor risks his life to help the people of Zarozje grind their wheat into flour knowing each miller before him had been the victim of a night stalker.

The tale is told about the “vampire” Sava, who frequented the watermill each night for some 90 years to feed on the millers who worked there, and the search by the villagers to find and destroy him.

It is important to note that in order to understand the time and circumstances that this story takes place in, reading the Translator's Notes and the Foreword are necessary as it gives you a greater understanding of the tradition and cultural flavor of the Serbian backdrop of the Village of Zarozje (Za-rozh-ye).

I must admit, having read many books with regard to vampire legend, I wondered whether this tale would take the same road as others have in the description of how the vampire happened on his victims and if the feeding method the vampire used was of a sanguinary nature. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Sava, the vampire, did not feed on the blood of his victims but through forceful touch, sucked out their life essence culminating in the death, by strangulation, of each of his victims.

Thank you, James, for taking the time to translate this wonderful piece of vampire lore. A piece of lore from the very cradle of Vampire legends that belies the popular notion of vampires biting necks and drinking the blood of their prey.

Great reference book

I'm taking the Investments course within the Certified Financial Planner program. This book really helped clarify many of the terms and formulas we had to learn. The Mayo text covers the material, but from a more academic slant. I just wish I had bought the Feibel book well before the class started. It may not be technical enough for graduate students in Finance or people who normally read scholarly papers on investment theory. But for everyone else, like individual investors or people going back to school learning investing fundmentals, it's a great reference.

Extremely well written and full of Excel examples

This book is so well written it is easy to absorb a huge amount of technical detail in a short time. Every concept and formula is explained in terms that assume no prior knowledge and then an Excel example is given to illustrate the mechanics underlying the math. It is a comprehensive reference that helps unravel the various formulas used to present investment performance metrics.

Great Marble Ilustrations, but try and find the description!

This book has fabulous marble illustrations, but absolutely no cross-referencing so a user can look up the description of the marble pictured. The author pre-supposes you are an expert and know what marble maker and type you are looking for. Illustrations are grouped together in one section of the book and each is identified only by the auction number and lot number it came from. Unfortunately, the descriptions of these marbles are not in the same order. Descriptions are ordered by marble manufacturer and type of marble. Even then, the auction numbers within the types are random. The book is only useful if you know what kind of marble you have and want to see what some similar marbles by the same manufacturer sold for. It bogles the imagination to understand why any sensible editor would not cross index this publication, so a person finding a marble they like in the illustrations, can then go read the description. It could take you a week to find the matching description. The sad thing is, that data was readily available to the author and the illustrations could have been keyed in a day! Worst example of editorship I have ever seen! Totally clueless! They never thought about, or cared, how a person might try to use the book. Save your money! I wish I had!

Book is totally disorganized. Beautiful pictures, but no way of researching values. The price list is in the back organized by lot no & auction no. NO reference to the illustration of the marbles in the front of the book, no way to look it up. Starts out promising, then becomes a total jumble. Totally impossible to locate anything. Too time consuming, and then still no resolve.

Great Marble Book!

Easier to use than some of the other marble "standards." It is well organized and the values, based on the condition of the marble, are with the marbles. Some of the other books have you constantly flipping from back to front to find a value. The different types of antique handmade marbles are logically grouped for the most part and the machine made marbles are divided by manufacturer.There is even a section with examples from contemporary marble artists. My one complaint would be that there should be an index to make finding of the great many types of machine made marbles easier. Until something better comes along, I carry this with me to auctions, flea markets, antique shows or anywhere else I think there might be an opportunity to buy, sell or trade marbles.

Double Good News - an excellent book on vedic architecture

The bad news is that Mr. Borden's guru, the greatest expert on Vastu (Vedic architecture) passed away in 2011. The good news is double - not only do we have Michael Borden, one of Dr. Sthapati's prime students, available to us, but also Mr. Borden has also brought out an excellent book on Vastu.

Now, I must say that the greatest book on Vastu, at least in modern times, is Dr. Sthapati's "Building Architecture of Sthapatya Veda." However, at least to me, with my limited knowledge of Vastu, the best book is Mr. Borden's new release "Vastu Architecture: Design Theory & Application for Everyday Life."

Without a doubt, Dr. Sthapati's book is deeper, more philosophical and more complete, but I think that Mr. Borden's book is clearer, simpler, better organized and more to the point. Let me put this another way: If you are planning to build a Vastu building, buy Michael Borden's book. If you have any serious interest in Vastu, buy Michael Borden's book.

My wife Mara and I do live in a Vastu house, designed jointly by Mara and Mr. Borden. It is wonderful and has changed the course of my life in a positive direction. Mara and I have about 8 or 9 other books on Vastu. I enjoyed reading "Vastu Architecture" far more than any of the others (10 on a scale of 1 to 10). I learned more from reading his book than all of the other books put together - for example, did you know that a human being is a Vastu structure? Also, Michal Borden's book confirmed what I intuitively knew: that Vastu is a spirit. Each building has a consciousness (or soul) and that soul is either happy or not, depending on how the structure was built, the surroundings, and to what degree the construction process adhered to the ancient Laws of Sthapata Veda.

Everyone interested in Vastu in any way should read Michael Borden's book. Those who want to delve deeply into Vastu should also peruse Dr. Sthapati's volume.

Finally a really great book on Vaastu

There are only two living people who really know Vaastu Shastras in the Western world. Michael Borden is one of them. 99% of the books on the market, even ones written by Indians, are pure hogwash. They are peacemeal at most and filled with superstition unsupported by the ancient texts. Michael's book is fully supported by ancient Vaastu texts. His knowledge comes from a true Vaastu Guru (Shilpi Guru) - the only authentic one of our time - Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati. While Sthapati passed on this year, Michael is one of the two people in the west that understand this tradition. He is vice chancellor of The American University of Mayonic Science and Technology which teaches Vaastu in an authentic way under the guidence of Sthapati. [...].

Dr. Sthapati's book - Building Architecture of Sthapatya Veda is the King of vaastu books but is not as detailed as Michael's book. In Sthapati's book he cautions the reader to not attempt to build a vaastu house on their own - this is a very wise caution. While Michael's book is very detailed and accurate I urge people to employ him to help with the building process. Building a vaastu house is complicated and requires daily supervision until the walls are up and the roof is on - and windows and doors installed. It takes years to know how to properly design and supervise the building of a proper vaastu house - trying to do it on your own is not something one should undertake.

Michael Borden spent years going to India to learn this topic. He has years of design and building experience. He is not just talking about Vaastu - he practices it as a vaastu architect.

You will learn from this book that Vaastu has nothing to do with moving furniture, putting up yantras, buying little so-called correction devices or any such thing. Don't waste your money buying them. They won't correct faulty vaastu. Vaastu/vastu is nothing short of a rigorous form of architecture that creates buildings that bring well being to those who live in them. If you live in a house that you feel is not supporting you and you can't build a new house then build a back yoard vaastu cottage or temple cottage (small is fine). It will bring peace and well being to you).

If you have any interest in architecture or vaastu in general you will love this book. If you are looking for a quick fix you won't find it here but you will come to really understand Vaastu.How To Build A Backyard Vaastu Temple Cottage

Finally, the best Vastu book on the market

Michael Borden's "Vastu Architecture: Design Theory and Application for Everyday Life" is by far, the best, and perhaps the only, well informed in-depth analysis of traditional Vastu. Vastu means space and the shastras or scriptures affirm that the space we inhabit is fundamental to our welfare. This book offers honest and accurate information that the author, an architect that studied at the Southern Cal Institute of Architecture, learned from years of study with renowned Indian architect, and builder of temples, Ganapati Sthapati, perhaps the most famous contemporary master of Vastu (he has passed away).

Borden avoids the cliches and false premises promoted by Vastu novices or "Vastu experts" who just focus on making a profit, not unlike Feng Shui commercial experts, who divert philosophy from practice. This last premise is fundamental, in my opinion. The adaptation of these practices in the West has brought on aberrations that are merely commercial but do not bring the practitioner to a balanced lifestyle (in the case of Feng Shui), or to spiritual uplifment and material harmony, in the case of Vastu. Borden's book avoids easy promises and clears an immense amount of misinformation and superstition presented in many Vastu studies. He also makes the knowledge accessible to Westeners, whether they are familiar with Vedic culture or not.

Finally, a textbook almost worth the price!

I purchased this text for our daughter, who is taking an introductory astronomy class. I never had the chance to take such a class myself but always had an interest in astronomy, so I started reading some of the chapters. To my great satisfaction, it was actually very well written, concise, and seemed to be up to date on the some of the more interesting and current issues in astronomy- dark matter/energy, inflationary universes, black holes, etc. It has an excellent explanation of black body radiation and how the emission profile of a celestial object gives can disclose both its temperature and much about its composition. It also takes care to show exactly what portion of the light specturm is used to generate each image (of which there are many beautiful ones included), which really helps understand why optical telescopes can't solve all the scientific mysteries (the center of the Milky Way can't even be seen in the visual spectrum due to dust). It also used a minimal amount of math, which takes away nothng from the points made. As a parent tired of forking over hundreds of dollars for textbooks that unnecessarily change edition every year (how is that possible, I ask?), I did not mind paying for this one.

Kudos to the authors for a very readable and useful text. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about astronomy but never had the opportunity. The only material that I thought might be improved was the section covering the H-R diagrams of star evolution- it would help to have a simple diagram of a typical star as it progresses through the main sequence and beyond, gaining or losing mass. the luminosity and temperature portions of the process are well described, but it's a bit hard to put it all together. Is the H-R diagram really the most useful way to understand star evolution? Regardless, this book rates as an outstanding science textbook in my opinion.

Excellent Introduction to Astronomy

I did not purchase this for a class, but as a new backyard stargazer that wanted to learn about astronomy in a little more depth than is provided in books like "Nightwatch". It is a textbook, obviously. However, I have found it to be a very accessible and enjoyable read with many fantastic illustrations to reinforce the concepts that it presents. Bear in mind that this is not a coffee table book, but a serious text of 750+ pages written to present, not just Astronomy, but the scientific method and observational evidence-based thinking to a collegiate audience of non-science majors. I am finding it to be a comprehensive treatment of astronomy, our solar system and the cosmos at large without being overwhelming. Astronomy Today will be a very rewarding read for those willing to put the time into it.

Very Good Intorduction

This is the first astronomy text that I have read. I found it to be excellent. The illustrasions are very well chosen & complement the text well. The style of writing is pleasant. I preffered it to the novel that I was also reading! It is light on math but there is so much for a novice to learn that was probably best. Each chapter is around 20 pages which for an easy 1 day read.

Finally, a Manly, Christian, Adventure Story

The United States is filled with Christians who are, quite frankly, sissies. As a result, there is a profusion of Christian books with characters who are also sissies. This is particularly true of children’s books. In such books we learn that Johnny should not fight the bully who is stealing his little sister’s milk money. Instead, Johnny prays for the bully, who almost immediately becomes a Christian and Johnny’s best friend. Such books give our children a sadly distorted view of Christian manhood. The truth is that, despite our prayers and evangelism, most bad guys are going to stay bad, and they will continue to do bad things unless righteous men stand and fight.

For this reason, we give thanks to God for The Daring Adventures, of which Ambushed in Africa is the first book. This has all the ingredients of an excellent adventure story: diamonds, gun fights, soldiers, vicious thieves, airplanes, explosions and subtle romance. What’s more, the young men in the story are just that: men. They have courage, honor, courtesy, quick wit, industry, strength of body and character, and a sense of humor. They are trained to defend themselves families and their friends from harm, and, when the time comes, that is exactly what they do. Kids of all ages will enjoy—and benefit from—this story.

Excellent Read!

I have been looking to buy this series for a long time, but was put off by the high postage costs. So it is very exciting to see this book (and the other eleven in the series) on Kindle! The book has been revised and updated a little, but without taking away from the story. If you love excellent, God-honouring adventure stories, then this is the series for you. The books are suitable for about ages nine and up, but enjoyable for anyone who loves adventure.

I Really like these books

I Really like these books! They are full of adventure, suspense, good clean fun, and best of all bring glory to God.
Also, they have characters who are good examples of what being manly and womanly is like.
As for romance there is some but, in both good taste and not too much.
Mark, Penny, and David's parents see and cultivate their children's strong points.

A seminal contribution to American Art History

With an informative text co-authored by Caleb Neelon and 'Zio', "Saber: Mad Society" is a collection showcasing graffiti wall-art as compiled and edited by Roger Gastman. Examples are taken from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and elsewhere to exemplify the style, placement and proliferation of this unique and often transitory artwork which ranges from the simple to the complex, and from the amateur to the professional. The patterns, colors, images depicted in these examples are truly impressive. The commentary provided is truly informative. Combined, they make "Saber: Mad Society" a seminal contribution to American Art History and inclusion into academic library and university art department reference collections.

The book was overall good and exciting with lots of laughs. Its kind of a kids book sort of speak... for graff writers. Mostly short storys and tons of pics. It can also be finished in one day, although i took two.

It starts out by going into sab's upbringing, which was acually interesting, kind of all makes sense. youll know what i mean when u read it.

Than it quickly dives into some of sab's legendary illegals and stomping grounds for AWR and MSK. It also grazes into a few other peoples lifes and tells some things that most people dont know.

I only wish he told more. I guess i feel that i got the short story of it all and i was in for the long. Im also very dissapointed that he never really got into king AYERS story, kinda just skipped over him.

all in all, its a book worth picking up for the price.

to sum it all up:
amazing artwork. deep, funny look into the life. in kind of a short story form.

If you are not familiar with Saber then get this book! if you are familiar with saber then get this book!!!! The book goes into detail about his childhood and through his teenage years with ALOT of artwork. The stories are in detail and pull you right in! truly a great book about a west coast graffiti artist! i couldn't find this book for a while and i found it on Amazon at a really good price, so dont wait... GET IT!
