Mesmerizing...

Utterly hypnotic and mesmerizing. Truly.
Two strangers meet on a train and engage in conversation. That, my friends, is the entirety of the plot summary. And, so, you wonder....5 stars for two strangers talking on a train? Really? Oh, yes. Really, and then some.
I admit, I'm not much for short stories. They normally leave me feeling shortchanged. Add to that, despite the wonderful reviews I've read for The Train of Arousal, I was skeptical the author could pull this off. I will admit, here and now, to being completely wrong in doubting this story in any way. And, I'm happy to do so!
As I sat down to read this, the background noise in my head was running full-speed. Worries, daily life, long-running issues--the types of things we all have going through our head constantly--would not shut off. I was tensed up, and ready to read with my normal speed, and almost as if I were attacking an enemy. I had never realized, but, I think I approach an awful lot like that. So, when I began to read The Train of Arousal, at the very first I was NOT getting it. But, the words drew me anyway. I kept on. By the time I was done, I took stock of myself, and realized that my breathing had slowed, my muscles had relaxed, and I was in a bit of a romantic haze, for lack of a better phrase. I read the story through a second time. The pacing and dialog flowed like honey. The combination of words left me breathless. There is a very real hypnotic quality to James Lusarde's writing . It's lovely. It forces you to slow down, your mind and your body, in order to truly appreciate the beauty and sensuality of the words. I've not had an experience like it before.
There are so very many passages I fell in love with and highlighted in The Train of Arousal, despite the lack of length. I obviously can't include them all, but I can leave you with my favorite (it's a long one) and encourage you to spend the mere $.99 at Amazon for your own copy of this book.
My Favorite Passage:
You know what it's like when you read sensual and arousing words in a story, and the sounds of them, the energy of them, make your head go ping? Do you know what I mean?
It's like a sizzle, a firework ignited inside you as the sensual words do their work. It's beautiful to surrender to that. We're women, we love being turned on by things like that. And you hunger for it, and thirst for it, and you keep reading the pages to discover new words, you're drunk on the sensation, because it feels so beautiful and natural, connecting you with yourself, with who you are and what you live for and what you want out of life.
And reading is beautiful to us like that - it's such a delicious pleasure.
Well then. Imagine how I felt sitting in front of this man, hearing his beautiful, dark and soothing voice saying all these words.
Imagine that.

Poetic masterpiece

This is a beautifully written journey of the mind. This thought provoking story oozes poetic sensuality and highlights the exquisite power of words and fantasy, perhaps best summed up by this line "if we keep things to a dream, we keep things to a beautiful intensity. The world of the mind is so strong, let's keep things there."

A SEDUCTION OF WORDS

Based on several rave reviews (Check it out over on Goodreads, I'm in the minority with my rating) I was intrigued by the very idea of this story. Two strangers meet on a train and a seduction of words takes place. I love the romance of trains, the whole idea of this is sexy to me, I love the idea of meeting someone and living for the moment, where the past and the future don't matter. I guess that's what I expected to get from this story -and maybe a bit of s-e-x. But that's not what this is about, this is about words, and seduction and mystery and it didn't entirely work for me.
I will say that the writing is wonderful -lots of quote-worthy passages and in all honesty if I'd had more experience with short stories I probably would have enjoyed this more, as it was though I just came away frustrated -what, that's it!?
In writing this review though I'm realizing that if I'm left wanting more and have nagging questions about the story -who is this woman? Why is she riding around endlessly on trains with a cup and saucer (actually I love that sound too) seducing random men to the point where they want her but not acting on it then moving on. This sounds lonely to me not sexy. I suppose for her it's all in the hunt, not in the act. If I'm left with all these questions though, left wanting more, than this story was probably better then I first realized.
So yes, a beautiful piece of writing, maybe not for everyone but worth the time it will take to read and reach your own conclusion. Cheers.
An observation
The heroine is like a spider spinning a web enticing her man in but once she gets him, once he's under her spell she realizes she's not hungry and releases him leaving him with the memory and the mystery.
`I like to talk. You might have noticed.'
`I like to listen. You might have noticed.'
`I like a man who listens. It's romantic.'
`I like a woman who talks. It's arousing.'
`There's something I want to do with you,' I smiled.
`I was hoping you would say something like that.'
